A judge refused to impose reporting restrictions in a case of a man accused of money laundering in excess of €1 million in Laois.

Eugene Doyle, 48, of 35 Ardan Glas, Mountrath Road, Portlaoise is accused of money laundering the sum of €1,203,555  at the M7 Southbound, Portlaoise on January 8, 2021.

Garda Sergeant JJ Kirby said the man was facing a single charge of money laundering and a book of evidence was being prepared.

Judge Andrew Cody noted the alleged offence dated back to 2021.

“He was only charged in April,” Sgt Kirby explained.

Sgt Kirby said he would have to liaise with a detective from the organised crime unit in relation to the case.

Solicitor Frank Taafe asked Judge Cody to impose restrictions on reporting citing “undue publicity” for his client.

Judge Cody said the man was entitled to the presumption of innocence like everyone else.

“I am not going to impose reporting restrictions,” he said.

He adjourned the case back to Portlaoise District Court on July 13 for service of the book of evidence.
