During the recent Longford Comhairle na nÓg annual youth conference in the Longford Arms Hotel, those in attendance voted that the issue most affecting young people in Ireland was mental health.
The Comhairle na nÓg youth conference is an annual gathering of a diverse group of invited and interested young people, aged 12–17.
The event welcomed over 100 young people from nine secondary schools and local youth organisations including: Meán Scoil Mhuire, St Mel's College, Templemichael College, Cnoc Mhuire Granard, Ardscoil Phádraig Granard, Ballymahon Vocational School, Mercy Ballymahon, Moyne Community College, Lanesboro Community College, Youthreach, County Longford Youth Services and Foróige.
The event was officially launched by the Cathaoirleach of Longford Turlough McGovern and hosted by Caoimhe Connell and Jace Serwadda.
The topics prioritised during the open discussion were mental health, body image and transport.
The voting result of the issue most affecting young people in Ireland was mental health.
The guest speaker was Evelyn Neary from Cian's Kennels who delivered a heartwarming speech about their journey to establish the charity.
In the coming weeks members of Comhairle na nÓg will be reviewing feedback and expressions of interest to join.
Longford Comhairle na nóg Coordinator Joanna Casey said, “We would like to extend our thanks to the County Council, members of the Steering Committee, Gardaí, local secondary schools and youth organisations for their continued support.
“We are looking forward to implementing the voices of Longford young people in our work during next term and sharing the Youth Conference findings on the national level.”
