There have been fresh calls this week for council executives to “scope out” other potential sources of recreational use for the county town's former geryhound track.
Independent Cllr Gerry Warnock wants to see the installation of soccer pitches and kayaking facilities
The proposal, put forward at last week's Longford Municipal District meeting, was unanimously supported by Cllr Warnock's fellow elected members.
Cllr Warnock said plans to develop a cycleway linking the Royal Canal to residential areas along the Park Road area of town would only serve to enhance the project.
“The proposed Cycle Path/Walkway will also be a significant development that will link the fantastic Longford Canal Walk with the many residential areas in and off the Park Road,” he said.
“It’s all about connectivity and opening up these valued recreational amenities to make them accessible to all.”
“(There is) much needed soccer pitches and perhaps an element that would allow for a mini-harbour/kayaking launch (within the confines of Longford greyhound track) which would allow access to the canal for water sports.”
