Longford Gardaí break up brawl between brothers

A man who was found brawling with his twin brother at a Longford housing estate during the early hours of the morning has been told to return to court with €250 if he wants to escape a criminal conviction.

Alvis Buivids (34), of 3B Killashee Street, Longford, pleaded guilty at last week's District Court sitting to being found under the influence of alcohol in public and of engaging in threatening and abusive behaviour.

That came, the court, heard, following an incident at MacEoin Park, Farnagh, Longford on October 27, 2022.
Sgt Mark Mahon, for the State, said gardaí came across the incident at around 3am in the mor ning.
When they arrived, officers found two brothers openly fighting in the street.

He said as gardaí attempted to “quell the situation”, they arrested Mr Buivids, who was deemed to be the main aggressor.
Frank Gearty, defending, said he could personally vouch for Mr Buivids' normally otherwise agreeable demeanour.

Mr Gearty said he had met the accused on a number of occasions previously when Mr Buivids accompanied a woman to his offices who had been the subject of alleged domestic violence.

He said under normal circumstances, Mr Buivids would be known for his polite and courteous nature, stressting his client was extremely contrite over what had unfolded on the night in question.

Mr Gearty was just as forthright in assuring Mr Buivids would not waste the court's time in attempting to rectify his own trangressions.
“He will turn up (on the next court date),” added Mr Gearty.

“He is quite a dependable fellow and is ashamed of what happened that night.”
Mr Buivids was remanded on bail to a sitting of Longford District Court on January 3.

Judge Bernadette Owens said if Mr Buivids turned up with a €250 court donation to St Christopher's Services, she would strike the charges against him out.

If, alternatively, Mr Buivids failed to meet those terms, she said she would impose a €250 fine for the section 6 threatening and abusive behaviour charge while taking into consideration the accompanying section 4 charge.
