Former Longford councillor Seán Lynch celebrates 90th birthday

Family and friends of Seán Lynch gathered in Our Lady’s Manor Nursing Home in Edgeworthstown to celebrate Seán’s 90th birthday on Saturday afternoon last.

Seán Lynch was a respected public representative, as a member of Longford County Council for 25 years. He was Cathaoirleach of the council in 1980-81. He represented Sinn Féin on the Council and Republican Sinn Féin after 1986.

The most momentous event in Seán’s life was when he gave the oration at the funeral of Martin Hurson in Galbally, Co Tyrone, after his death on hunger strike in Long Kesh in July 1981.

Appropriately, many of Seán’s friends from Republican Sinn Féin were there on Saturday to extend their congratulations on his birthday.

Seán O Súilleabháin paid tribute to Seán Lynch saying that he was the upholder of the republican tradition in Longford for over seventy years.

Since the 1950s, he was the chief organiser of the annual Easter Commemoration held to commemorate the men of Longford who died in the fight for Irish freedom.

Seán’s sisters, Anna Murray and Cathy Lee, along with a host of his nieces and nephews and extended family were thrilled to see Seán in such good form and enjoying the presence of so many friends and well-wishers.

Seán’s family and friends wish to thank the staff of Our Lady’s Manor Nursing Home who put in great work in preparation for this special event.
