'Extremely intoxicated' Longford man apologises for banging on front door of apartments

A man “arrested for his own safety” was told he can avoid a criminal conviction for public order if he makes a donation of €250 to a local charity.


John Feeney (35) of Kilmore Cross, Clondra Longford was before Longford District Court facing two public order charges.


The defendant was charged with public intoxication and failing to comply with the direction of a Garda.
Inspector Paddy McGirl told the court that at 10:40pm on December 3, 2022 officers on patrol responded to a call regarding an incident on Great Water Street.


When Gardaí arrived at the address they encountered a male banging on a front door of apartments. They spoke to the man who was “extremely intoxicated”, the officers were concerned for his safety, and asked him to leave the area, but he refused to do so.


The defendant was “arrested for his own safety” and brought to Longford Garda Station.
Inspector McGirl said Mr Feeney had a previous conviction for theft, but none for public order offences.
Solicitor John Quinn said his client wished to extend an apology for his behaviour on the night which was the result of “too much alcohol”


Judge Bernadette Owens offered the defendant an opportunity to a avoid a conviction for the charges before the court if he paid €250 to St Christopher's.
The judge adjourned the matter to March 7, 2023 to allow the defendant a chance to come up with the money.
