Specsavers Longford invites people to prioritise regular eye and ear tests
This World Health Day, April 7, 2026, as the World Health Organisation (WHO) rallies the globe under the theme "Together for health. Stand with science," Specsavers Longford is encouraging proactive health management by highlighting the importance of routine eye and hearing examinations.
These accessible checks not only check sight and hearing but are also early warning systems for overall health and well-being, playing a role in early detection and preventative care for all.

Eye Examinations: Beyond a prescription update, a comprehensive eye exam at Specsavers uses advanced technology like Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) scans, which create a detailed 3D image of the structures at the back of your eye, and high-resolution digital retinal photography to examine blood vessels, the optic nerve and the retina. These structures provide indicators for conditions such as diabetes (diabetic retinopathy), high blood pressure (hypertension), glaucoma, macular degeneration and potential risks of stroke or brain tumours.
Hearing Checks: Routine hearing checks offer clues about a person's general health. Untreated hearing loss has been increasingly linked to cognitive decline and dementia, an increased risk of falls, social isolation and depression, and even potential cardiovascular issues. Early intervention can significantly mitigate these risks, enhancing overall quality of life.
Speaking ahead of World Health Day, Kerril Hickey, Specsavers Chairperson commented, "We believe everyone deserves easy access to health services that empower them to live healthier lives. Beyond simply checking sight and hearing, routine eye and hearing examinations can detect serious underlying systemic health conditions often before symptoms even appear. We are inviting people to treat these routine checks as part of their annual health check-ups, empowering everyone to take an active, informed role in their long-term health."
In observance of World Health Day and in a commitment to empowering the nation's health, Specsavers Longford invites people to prioritise these checks. To book your eye or hearing examination, or to learn more about these tests, please visit your nearest Specsavers store or go to www.specsavers.ie.
