Saving lives: Longford Defibrillator Group making an impact in the town

On Valentine’s Day Longford Town Defibrillator Group launched their first defibrillator at Mollaghans furniture store Longford

The Longford town Defibrillator Group launched their first defibrillator on Saturday, February 14 at Mollaghan's furniture store.

The Longford town Defibrillator Group was established in October 2025 by local volunteers who want to ensure there are 24-hour accessible and well maintained defibrillators throughout Longford town.

An official committee was formed in December 2025 to support this work and help protect the community.

In Ireland, almost 3,000 people suffer an out of hospital cardiac arrest every year (HSE, 2024). Each minute without defibrillation reduces survival by up to 10 percent (European Resuscitation Council, 2021), and early access to a defibrillator before emergency services arrive can almost double a person’s chance of survival (Irish Heart Foundation, 2024; Nichol et al., 2010).

Genny Casey, Chairperson of Longford town Defibrillator Group, explained, "There are currently two defibrillators that the group has ownership of. Our first objective is to get these defibrillators fully operational and accessible to the public as soon as possible. On Valentine’s Day we launched our first defibrillator at Mollaghans furniture store Longford. It is accessible twenty four hours a day to the public."
Ms Casey added, "Despite the clear evidence that defibrillators save lives, many cardiac arrests still occur without one nearby. Having publicly accessible defibrillators in key locations across Longford town will give people the best possible chance of survival when every second counts."
She concluded by asking people to please consider donating to their 'Longford Town Defibrillator Group Phase 1' idonate
fundraising page HERE. "Your support will help us bring these life saving devices into service and build a safer community for everyone," concluded Ms Casey.
