Service users with RehabCare, who are based at Redleaf House, Townspark, Longford participated in a litter pick along the canal on Wednesday, May 8.
On a lovely sunny day, and working in collaboration with Eoghan Dwyer from Longford County Council, twelve volunteers and staff covered three kilometres along the canal, and they made a positive impact on the community and the environment by picking up rubbish.
RehabCare Programme facilitator, Tony Kilkenny said, “These initiatives contribute to a cleaner and more inclusive local area. It was a great morning for all involved.’’
Christine Devlin added, “The canal is a shared space where people can enjoy walks and nature. So, it’s important that we clean up after ourselves.”
The service users and staff, working in conjunction with the local council, intend to continue the litter pick once a month along the canal and surrounding areas. Mr Kilkenny explained, “They feel it is very important to look after and give back something to the local community which supports them on many occasions.”
As a service, RehabCare Longford are committed to aligning with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and the litter pick aligns particularly with goals 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), and 13 (Climate Action).
