Ballymahon Vocational School U-19 Boys Basketball squad who play St Ronan’s College, Lurgan from Co Armagh in the All-Ireland Schools U-19 'C' League Final
Ballymahon Vocational have achieved considerable sporting success down through the years, mainly on the gaelic football fields, and the south Longford school are now just one step away from winning a National Basketball title.
St Ronan’s College, Lurgan from Co Armagh are the opposition in the All-Ireland Schools U-19 'C' League Final at the National Basketball Arena this Tuesday, March 8th, and the Ballymahon VS boys will be heading to Tallaght in a confident frame of mind.
Showing remarkable spirit and resilience under the driving force of their shrewd coach Ben McCormack, Ballymahon VS have played eight games on their path to the All-Ireland decider and it will be a tremendous achievement should they succeed in crossing the final hurdle in their quest for glory.
The exciting adventure began with a win over Moate Community School in the opening round and Ballymahon VS then overcame the challenge of Athlone Community College, Colaiste Mhuire Mullingar, Mountmellick Community School and Cistercian College Roscrea on their way to winning the Regional competition.
The prize was a place in the All-Ireland play-offs and the all conquering Ballymahon VS side dispatched O’Carolan College Nobber (Meath) before taking on Ennistymon CBS (Clare).
The games were getting tougher but there was still no stopping Ben McCormack’s charges who emerged victorious in a 48-46 thriller against Ennistymon in marching on to meet Pobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne from Dingle in the All-Ireland semi-final.
Seven points (49-40) separated the sides in the finish as Ballymahon VS proved too good for their Kerry opponents and the stage is now set for the National final against St Ronan’s College in Dublin this Tuesday with the match starting at 12 noon.
