Talented Longford athlete Emma Brennan followed up her recent All-Ireland success with victory in the junior girls race at the Connacht Schools Cross Country Championships in Loughrea on Wednesday.

A dominant display of front-running by the second year Moyne Community School student saw her cross the line first of the 72 finishers. Emma also led Moyne CS to second place in the team standings backed up by Martha Miney, Eleanor Reilly, Mia Kiernan and Leah McVeigh for a team score just one point behind winners Sacred Heart Westport. Orla Miney, also Moyne CS, placed fifth in the opening race of the day in  the minor girls.

Max Gallagher, Mercy Ballymahon, placed ninth in the junior boys race with a good run which also saw Moyne CS secure third place. Aironas Andriuska, Padraic Mulligan, Cormac Mulligan, Michael Murtagh, Darragh Grimes, Ryan McCabe and Oren McKenna combined for third behind Summerhill Sligo and St Gerald’s Castlebar.

An excellent top-ten finish also earned Mercy Ballymahon's Rachel Keenan a qualifier spot for the All-Irelands in the inter girls category. Robin Og Murphy, Katie Duignan and Amy Jordan all placed well as the team finished seventh.

The event saw the largest number of participants from Longford schools in quite a number of years and included entries also from St. Mel’s College.

The top-15 finishers in each race, and the two Moyne CS teams, are among those advancing from the Connacht region to the All-Ireland Schools Cross Country Championships in Waterford on 11 March.

A number of athletes in action on Wednesday will be back racing this weekend as part of the 67-strong entry from Longford Athletics Club for the Connacht Indoor Championships in Athlone.
