The Solemn Novena to Our Lady continues each Wednesday evening at 7.30pm. with large crowds in attendance. All are encouraged to take part for the remaining few weeks. All ceremonies in St. Mary’s Church are on the World Wide Web at


The guild’s next meeting will take place at Granard’s Credit Union Seminar Room on this Thursday, 3rd December at 8pm. A Bring and Buy Sale with a Christmas theme will take place and members are requested to bring along a small item for the sale. Supper will be served. New members are very welcome to come along and join in the festive mood. Congratulations to the members who took part and were runners up to Ardagh Guild in the Federation Cookery Cup last week. President Liz Brady presented May Kelly with the box of calico dolls made recently by our guild members for the Children’s Hospitals in Dublin.

Table Quiz

Granard Area Action Group are holding their annual Table Quiz in Fay’s Bar on Friday 4th December at 9.00pm. This is a well established fun event and always an enjoyable night. Granard Area Action Group are sponsors of the local Community Employment Project in the parishes of Abbeylara Granard and Mullinalaghta as well as Bunlahy village. Participants on the project also assist in Lus na Greine FRC; Rath Mhuire Resource Centre and Dolmen Services ; Adult Learning Centre Granard; St. Mary’s GAA Complex; St. Columba’s G.A.A.; Pitch & Putt Club Granard. This yearly fundraiser helps to defray costs of sponsoring the project. As this is the only public fundraising held during the year the group will greatly appreciate the support of all local community groups and sub-sponsors.

Christmas Markets

Calling on local businesses and craft people. The traditional Christmas Market will take place on Sunday, 6th December from 2 to 5pm. Everyone welcome on the day. We will also have our unique Live Crib and switching on of Christmas lights and of course Santa will arrive. Exhibitors are required to set up their own stall and have their own insurance cover. This is a great festive family day for our town with mulled wine; hot chocolate and mince pies. Anyone interested in taking part can call Marie on 087/9487673 or Bernie on 086/1618837.

Fireside Tales

The launch of the latest edition of Fireside Tales No. 13 by Jude Flynn took place in Longford Library on Thursday 26th November. The book is available to purchase at Donoghue’s Hardware Store, Granard priced at €20.00. An ideal Christmas Gift.

Birthday celebrations

Congratulations to Mrs Mena Macken, Robinstown, Granard who celebrated her 80th Birthday with a surprise party hosted by her family in Crawford’s Lounge, Abbeylara on Saturday, 28 November. We wish Mena many more happy years.

AG Bingo

Bingo continues each Wednesday night at the Community Centre, Granard commencing at 8.45pm. Jackpot stands at €20,000 in 42 calls or less. The second Jackpot is €3,600 in 50 calls or less. Your continued support is appreciated. Proceeds go to Abbeylara and St. Mary’s G.A.A. clubs.

Credit Union

Special Christmas loans now available. Contact a member of staff for details. Apply early to avoid disappointment. Hours of business 10am-5pm Tuesday-Saturday. Reminder to members over the age of 65 years who are not entitled to pay dirt tax. To avoid this is very important to collect your DE 1 form at the office.  Forms need to be filled out and returned to avoid the above. Monster Member draw will take place in December for very valuable cash prizes. To be in with a chance to win make sure your account is in credit.

Historical Society

The next meeting of the Society will at 7.30pm on Thursday, 3rd December in Rath Mhuire Resource Centre. Barrack Street. Guest Speaker to be confirmed. All are welcome.

Siopa Lus na Greine

Our Siopa is open Thursday, Friday and Saturday, 10am – 5pm. Thank you for your continued support. We welcome your cast offs, bric –a – brac etc. these can be dropped into An Siopa. All proceeds from An Siopa go directly to the Centre to fund projects in the Community.

Country Markets

Granard Country Markets continue every Friday morning from 8.30am to 11am in the Motte Enterprise Project premises (opposite Kearney’s Garage). They are now taking orders for Christmas Cakes, Puddings Cards etc. They also have the usual supply of homemade bread and cakes, crafts, country eggs and firewood in stock and they look forward to meeting all their patrons and thank them for their loyal support.


The St. Vincent de Paul Shop, Main Street, Granard opens each Monday morning from 10.00am to 2.00pm. Every Friday 10.00am to 5.00pm and Saturday from 11.00am to 5.00pm as well as the first Tuesday of each month. Come along and bag a bargain while supporting a very worthy local cause.


The organising committee of the recent Concert in St. Mary’s Church, Granard with the Garda Male Voice supported by Sacred Heart National School Choir wish to thank everyone who supported the event in any way. All funds raised will assist the committee of SVP in helping those in need in the local community.

Adult Badminton

Badminton takes place each Monday night from 8.00pm to 10.00pm in the Canon Kelly Community Sports Hall at the rear of Ard Scoil Padraig. Four (4) playing courts. Shuttles supplied. Phone William for further information on 086 8226523.

Rural Transport

County Longford / Westmeath Community Transport have vacancies on their “Door to Door” services throughout the county. All age groups catered for. Citizens Information

Citizens Information Outreach Information Service at Granard Area Action Group Information Office continues each Thursday morning from 10.30am to 12.30pm. No appointment necessary.

Senior Citizens Party

Lus na Greine FRC will host the annual Christmas Party on Sunday, 13th December in the Community Centre, Barrack Street, Granard where a warm welcome will greet you. All welcome. This is the big day we all look forward to as there will be good food, good music and lots of spot prizes. Transport can be provided just let us know.
