The next guild meeting will be held on this Thursday, 5th November at the Credit Union Seminar Room. Entrance at the rear of the building. Guest speaker for the meeting will be Christine from Citizens Information Services Longford. Everyone very welcome to come along to this informative talk. Members who have completed their dolls should bring them along please. Hostesses on the night are Nancy and Rosemary. Federation meeting and Cookery Cup competition will take place in the Vintage Moydow on Tuesday 24 November.

Supper Dance

A Supper Dance will take place in the Park House, Edgeworthstown on this Friday, 6th November 2015 with music by Vince Carr and Anne McCrory. Proceeds in aid of St. Patrick’s Church of Ireland Restoration Fund Granard. Tickets are €15.00. Doors open at 9.30pm. Your support will be greatly appreciated.

Longford Palliative Homecare

Fundraising night for Longford Palliative Homecare, in memory of the late Willie Tully, Killoe takes place on Friday, 6th November at 9.30pm in The Longford Arms Hotel.

Country Markets

Granard Country Markets continue every Friday morning from 8.30am to 11.00 am in the Motte Project premises (opposite Kearney’s Garage). They are now taking orders for Christmas Cakes, Puddings Cards etc. They also have the usual supply of home made Bread and cakes, crafts, country eggs and firewood in stock and they look forward to meeting all their patrons and thank them for their loyal support.

Gun Club

The club held their Long Pheasant competition in the Bay Horse on Sunday 1st November. We would like to thank John Lyham for the use of his premises and kind donation. Well done to all the members who took part and the winner Christo Connell. Tickets are on sale now for our annual Christmas draw. You support would be gratefully appreciated.

Human Trafficking

Diablo is a powerful play on Human Trafficking will be staged in the Temperance Hall on Monday 9th November at 8.00pm. It is presented by Spanner in the Works Theatre Co. Belfast. They leave no stone unturned as they unpack the complex crime in a riveting performance that is sure to move the hardest of hearts. The Draft Register of Electors 2016/2017 is now being prepared. If you live in County Longford and wish to vote you should check that you are registered correctly to vote. If you have any family members resident in County Longford who will be 18 years or over by 15th February 2016 they may also be registered to vote. Benefit Dance

A Benefit dance for the family of the late Sean Mulligan Ballinamuck will take place in the Breffni Arms Hotel Arva on Monday, 16th November 2015. Tickets cost €10 each - the committee will be out selling tickets over the next few weeks and your support will be very greatly appreciated for this very worthy cause. 

Change for Charity

National Coin Week takes place from Monday 2nd to Sunday 8th November. Please bring your jar; bottle or bag of coins, put them into one of the receptacles, conveniently located all around the country including branches of Allied Irish Bank and locally Bank of Ireland Granard. Money raised goes towards 5 key Irish charities together – The Irish Heart Foundation, St. Francis Hospice, Our Lady’s Hospice and Care Services, Gaisce – the Presidents Awards and Irish Autism Action, smaller charities, community projects and youth groups. Please support.

Garda Choir

The Garda Siochana Male Voice Choir will be performing in St. Mary’s Church, Granard on Sunday, 15th November at 5pm. Supported by the local Schools choir. Tickets can be purchased in shops locally priced at €10. Proceeds go to the local branch of St. Vincent de Paul. Your support will be greatly appreciated.

Pitch & Putt

The annual general meeting of Granard Pitch and Putt Club will take place on Sunday, 22 November at 6pm in St. Mary’s G.A.A. Clubhouse. All members are invited to attend and new ones will be very welcome.


Johnny and Fiona Macken would like to thank most sincerely all those who sponsored or contributed to their annual fundraising efforts while taking part in the 3 Province Breffni Challenge recently. They raised a total of €4,025.00 for the Friends of St. Luke’s; Breast Cancer Research and Cavan Monaghan Palliative Homecare.

Table Quiz

Granard Area Action Group sponsors of the local Community Project will hold their annual Table Quiz in Fay’s Bar on Friday, 4th December. This is the group’s only public fundraiser in the year. Recently some of the equipment used for Tidy Towns work was stolen from the lock up shed and this has now to be replaced so the support of all would be appreciated.


The St. Vincent de Paul Shop, Main Street, Granard opens each Monday morning from 10.00am to 1.00pm. Every Friday 10.00am to 5.00pm and Saturday from 11.00am to 5.00pm as well as the first Tuesday of each month. Come along and bag a bargain while supporting a very worthy local cause.

Citizens Information

An information officer from Citizens Information Outreach Service attends at Granard Area Action Group Information Office each Thursday morning from 10.30am to 12.30pm. No appointment necessary.

Siopa Lus na Greine

Our Siopa is open Thursday, Friday and Saturday, 10am – 5pm. Thank you for your continued support. We welcome your cast offs, bric –a – brac etc. these can be dropped into An Siopa. All proceeds from An Siopa go directly to the Centre to fund projects in the Community.

Book Launch

Congratulations to Lanesboro native Ciaran Mullooly who launched his new book on Friday last, 30 October at Longford Library. A large crowd was present to see Paul Williams Crime Correspondent with the Irish Independent Newspapers launch “Back to the Future”. Ciaran’s former school pal Joe Flaherty was M.C. for the evening. The book is priced at €12 and makes a very good read. Part of the proceeds go towards Good 2 Talk counselling and psychotherapy support services Longford.


On Monday 2nd November at Longford Library, Ciaran Mullooly reversed rolls when he launched the Longford Historical Society’s annual Publication - Teathbha edited by James MacNerney. This book has many interesting articles on historical events in Co. Longford. Something of local interest is an article by Luke Baxter on the concert performed by the great tenor the late Count John McCormack in the Town Hall Granard in the early 1900’s. The book is available in Donoghue’s Hardware Store in Granard and is priced at €12. These books will make ideal Christmas Presents for family and friends at home and away.

AG Bingo

Bingo continues each Wednesday night at the Community Centre, Granard commencing at 8.45pm. Jackpot stands at €20,000 in 42 calls or less. The second Jackpot is €3,200 in 49 calls or less. Your continued support is appreciated. Proceeds go to Abbeylara and St. Mary’s G.A.A. Clubs.

Fireside Tales

On Thursday, 26th November the launch of the latest edition of Fireside Tales by Jude Flynn will take place also in Longford Library.

Moatsiders Active Retirement Group

Our next meeting date will be this Thursday, 5th November at 2.30pm and we will be having our annual Mass for deceased members. Family members are most welcome. Refreshments will be served.

Rath Mhuire Men’s Social Club

Meeting Date: Tuesday – November 10th in Rath Mhuire Centre at 12.30pm. New members are very welcome, good company and good food will also be provided!

Dolmen Centre

There are a range of activities and social events happening for the Autumn in the Dolmen Centre. New members are very welcome.

Visitor Centre Project

Congratulations to Fergus Kelly, Ballymaurice, Granard and Anna Lynch, Loughduff who were married in St. Joseph’s Church, Loughduff on 23rd October. We wish the happy young couple every blessing for the future.


The death occurred suddenly at her residence on 28 October of Margaret Kerrigan, Glasnevin, Dublin, nee Owens, formerly of Granard. She will be dearly missed by her loving husband Jimmy, son Tom, daughter-in-law Niamh, grandchildren Lauren and Troy, her brothers, sisters and extended family circle. Funeral Mass was celebrated on Saturday in St. Colmcille’s Church, Swords followed by burial in adjoining cemetery. May she rest in peace.
