Gun Club

The Pheasant shooting season begins on this Sunday the 1st November. All lands throughout the parish are preserved for club members only. Mass will be celebrated in St. Bernard’s Church, Abbeylara for all deceased club members at 7.30pm on Monday 2nd November. The Club wishes all its members Good and Safe shooting throughout the season. The Club will hold its annual Longest Pheasant competition in Crawford’s Lounge on Tuesday night, 3rd November for the Michael McCormack Perpetual Cup. The competition is confined to the following club members only, Abbeylara, Granard, Streete and Molly Clubs. Everyone welcome on the night.

The Fifty’s Club

On Thursday last we had a very enjoyable afternoon with 14 members attending.  Our guest speakers were Aiden and Catherine from the Bank of Ireland. One could hear a pin drop while Aidan spoke about banking on line and all about using Facebook, what to do and what not to do.  He also told us all about using our laser/visa cards.  We finished off the afternoon with a lovely cuppa and then one round of Bingo, the full house was won by Maureen.  Our next get together is on Thursday, 29th October in Handball Alley Sports Centre. New members welcome. The time is from 2.30pm to 4.00pm and this week we will have the Antiques Road Show and discussion to follow, see you there.

Active Age

We are having our Christmas Party in the Bloomfield Hotel on Sunday, 29 November from 12.30pm to 5.00pm.  We will be joining up with other clubs from the Midland Region. A four course meal, raffle for spot prizes and music by the Kavanagh’s.... Price only €25 per member.

National Coin Week

Change for Charity: National Coin Week takes place from Monday, 2 to Sunday, 8 November. Please bring your jar; bottle or bag of coins, put them into one of the receptacles, conveniently located all around the country including branches of Allied Irish Bank and Bank of Ireland. Money raised goes towards 5 key Irish charities together – The Irish Heart Foundation, St. Francis Hospice, Our Lady’s Hospice and Care Services, Gaisce – the Presidents Awards and Irish Autism Action, smaller charities, community projects and youth groups. Please support.

Garda Siochana Choir

Garda Siochana Male Voice Choir will be performing in St. Mary’s Church Granard on Sunday 15 November at 5.00pm. Tickets can be purchased in local shops priced at €10. Proceeds go to local St. Vincent de Paul. Your support is very much appreciated.

Parish Draw

Community Meeting

We are pleased to announce that Longford will host one of Bank of Ireland’s Enterprise Towns for 2015. Through this initiative Bank of Ireland and the Longford business community are working together to support local business. In addition we will involve the wider community and our local schools through a range of different activities. To hear more about the plans for your Enterprise Town and/or to get involved please join us in the Longford Arms Hotel next Thursday 29 October at 6.30pm.

Benefit Dance

A Benefit Dance for the family of the late Sean Mulligan, Ballinamuck will take place in the Breffni Arms Hotel, Arva on Monday 16 November 2015. Tickets cost €10 each – the committee will be out selling tickets over the next few weeks and your support will be very much appreciated.

Citizens Information

An information officer from Co. Longford Citizens Information Service is available at Granard Area Action Group Office Main Street Granard each Thursday morning from 10.30am to 12.30pm. No appointment necessary.


Takes place every Wednesday night at 8.45pm in the Community Centre Granard. Proceeds go towards St. Mary’s Granard and Abbeylara GAA Clubs. Jackpot waiting to be won is now €20,000 and if not won there is a second Jackpot this week for €3,100 in 49 numbers, a lot of shopping could be done with Christmas around the corner even if you never played bingo. Seats are limited so come along early to avoid the rush and enjoy the fun. IT COULD BE YOU!

The Draft Register of Electors 2016/2017 is now being prepared. If you live in County Longford and wish to vote you should check that you are registered correctly to vote.
