First Holy Communion

Congratulations to the following pupils of Aughnagarron N. S. who received their First Holy Communion on Saturday, 17 May in Carra Church - Enda Battrim, Gemma Columb, Niamh Cunningham, Niamh Grier, Aoibhínn Lynch, Jack Martin, Kathlyn McGuire, Míchaela O’Reilly, Aisling Scanlon & Ryan Sheridan.

Carra Cemetery Sunday

Thanks very much to the people who mowed and strimmed the grass in this Cemetery during the past week. There is still some mowing and strimming to be done; perhaps other people may be able to help out this coming week. Please try to keep it mowed and strimmed. Cemetery Sunday takes place on Sunday 1st June.

Parish Draw

The final Parish Draw for 2013/14 takes place on Friday, 23 May in Abbeylara after the 7.30 pm Mass. Any monies due to the draw, please hand in before the draw. Please if possible pay your renewal fee of €100 full year; €50 half year or €25 quarter year to your collector. Many thanks to those people who have paid their renewal fee. Thank you for your ongoing support of the Parish Draw, which is of great benefit to our parish finances. Thanks also to our collectors. Please make cheques payable to Abbeylara Parish, as this is very necessary for banking regulations.


Thanks very much too all the people who have returned their Trócaire contributions which to date has realised €2,666. Those yet to do so are kindly requested to return their Trócaire money as soon as possible please.

Citizens Information

An information officer from Co. Longford Citizens Information Service is available at Granard Area Action Group Office Main Street Granard each Thursday morning from 10.30am to 12.30pm. No appointment necessary.

Free Training Opportunities

Would you be interested in an introduction to digital photography, sending/receiving emails, using social media, using apps, buying tickets and on-line banking? Longford EDI Centre is running an 8-hour basic computer course, which can be delivered mornings, afternoons or evenings. Blood Donor Clinic

The Irish Blood Transfusion Service wish to thank the 180 donors who attended the recently held clinic in St Brigid’s Community Centre, Loch Gowna. A breakdown of the total figures shows that four first time donors and 14 former donors attended the clinic. For more information on the service please call John Healy on 041 685994.

Community Games

Community Games sports day will be held in Abbeylara this Bank Holiday Monday, the 2 June at 4pm. We have done really well this year in the Community Games and we hope to see a big turnout for our sports day with something for everyone. 

Dancing Lessons

Takes place on Tuesdays in Lus Na Greine from 8pm to 10pm. Learn to jive, waltz, foxtrot and quickstep. Cost €10.

Granard Visitor Centre

The committee would like to sincerely thank all who purchased tickets in our 2nd annual Community Draw. Again we received great support and this will enable us to continue work on the project. Our May draw will take place at our next public meeting to be held in the Community Centre on Tuesday, 3 June 3 at 9pm. Congratulations also to Michael and Edel Kiernan, Lismacaffrey who won our two tickets for this weekend’s “One Direction” concert. This draw was sponsored by Kiernan Milling and we thank them very much for their great support of our community project. Also thanks and commiserations to all others who supported the draw. Unfortunately, there can be only one winner.


Set dancing classes continues on Friday evenings for children from 6pm – 7pm at Mariett Smith’s house.

Cycle and Climb

The 4th Annual Glenn Brady Memorial Cycle and Climb from Longford to Croagh Patrick will take place on Sunday June 1st.

Tidy Towns

With only a few weeks before judging begins, the Tidy Towns committee ask you all to make this special effort to keep our village tidy and looking its best. We would like to see all the residents of Abbeylara mowing their lawns and keeping their premises and gates all looking their best.

Happy Hearts Walking Club

Walking continues very Monday evening at 7pm, meeting at Higginstown Sports Complex. Great to see all the old faces back again, now we can get started on planning some new and exciting routes. See you all Monday!

Benefit night

On Friday night, 23 May, there will be a benefit night in the Stags Head at 9pm till late for Dominic Norton who has had serious brain surgery and has more to come in the next month. Music on the night by Carmel McLoughlin, door Prize and raffle on the night. Refreshments will also be served. Tickets are €10 and are available from all businesses in the village. Your support would be very much appreciated.


Takes place every Wednesday night at 8.45pm in the Community Centre Granard. Proceeds go towards St. Mary’s Granard and Abbeylara GAA Clubs. Jackpot is now €15,700. Seats are limited with this big Jackpot so come along early. IT COULD BE YOU!

Field Day

Abbeylara Field Day takes place on Sunday, June 8 where there will be lots of fabulous entertainment for children and adults which include the following: Steam Trashing Demonstration, Tractor Pulling, Pony and Trap Rides, Car Boot Sales, Egg and Spoon Races, 3 Legged Race, Tug-of-War for ladies and gents, Midget Car Racing, Bouncing Castles which are free to all Children, Vintage Tractors, a Dog Show with different Categories, and Bumping Car Rides. There will be also be a trophies for the best dressed Lady and Gent. There will food stalls and stands on the day boasting an array of home baking so all palettes will be catered for. There will also be music on the day. There will be free parking on the day and disabled parking close to the enterance of the field (Permit holders only). Admission on the day is €10 and children are free. All proceeds are in aid of our Parish funds, therefore your support would be very much appreciated. Virginia Gospel Choir

The Virginia Gospel Choir will perform a Concert this Sunday 25 May at 6pm in St. Mary’s Church, Granard. Your support would be very much appreciated.

Abbeylara GAA is having a meeting tomorrow, Thursday, 22 May in the Handball Complex, Abbeylara at 8.30pm. All officers and committee members are requested to attend please.

5Km Charity Walk/Run

The above takes place in Derrycassin woods on Sunday 25 May at 3.00pm. Donations voluntary. All are welcome.

Open Air Festival

On Sunday 1st June the Colmcille Branch of the Mentally Handicapped will hold their annual fundraising event at Dring Car Park on the shores of Lough Gowna in aid of St. Christopher’s Day Centre, Battery Road, Longford.
