The Library has a number of events on for Heritage Week: Friday, 28 August at 7.30pm Dr. Kieran O’Conor will speak on Granard’s Motte and Bailey hosted by Granard Area Historical Group. Saturday, 29 August at 12.00pm - A Viking Warship Sails Again - The Stallion from Glendalough – a talk by Brendan Fagan. Saturday at 3.00pm - Introducing John Dungan: A Man of Wealth and Taste – talk by Brendan Fagan.

Exam results

Well done to the all the students from the local schools who received their Leaving Cert results last week and got their 3rd Level offers on Monday. We wish them well in their chosen courses for the future.

Gun Club

The club wish to congratulate their members on winning the County Shoot on Sunday last at Derragh. The winning team members were Charlie Martin, Joe Coyle, Owen Martin, Ray McLoughlin and Trevor Reilly. The club would like to remind members that membership and Insurance is now overdue and can be paid to Joe Coyle.

Tractor Run

The annual tractor run in aid of Diabetes takes place on Sunday, 30 August departing from Higginstown Complex at 2pm. Barbeque (weather permitting) and Raffle for valuable prizes in J.V.’s afterwards. Your support will be appreciated.

Handball Success

Congratulations to brothers Darren and Niall Flynn, Toneymore, Abbeylara and members of Abbeylara Handball Club won gold medals in the men’s doubles at the World Handball Championship in Calargy Canada last week. Well done also to fellow club members Jonathan Mahon and Fintan Creamer who reached the semi-final in the same grade.

Rural Development Programme

Longford Community Resources Ltd has commenced the consultation process to develop the Local Strategy for next round of the Rural Development Programme, commonly known as the LEADER programme. Letters and submission forms are currently being circulated. Callaghan Academy

Dancing classes for boys and girls 4 years plus. Children get the opportunity to participate in team and solo dancing for competition, grade examinations and for fun. Registration takes place at an Open Evening on 15 September in Granard Community Centre from 6.30pm to 7.30pm. Farewell Social

A Farewell Social and Presentation to Father P.J. Fitzpatrick P.P. Loch Gowna who is leaving the parish for Mountemple will take place on Friday 28 August in the Pikers Lodge, Loch Gowna at 8pm.  Buffet served 8.30pm to 9.30pm. All are welcome.


Presentation and Appreciation night in memory of Martin Cadden will be held in the Pikers Lodge, Lough Gowna on Friday 21st August commencing at 10.00pm. Presentation of a cheque to the Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust on the night. Music on the night presented by the Mad Ass Mules featuring Marty Mone of the “Hit The Diff” fame. No children allowed.

Historical Society

To celebrate Heritage Week we are delighted to say we have invited Dr. Kieran O’Connor to give a lecture/talk on Granard Motte and Bailey. Many people will be familiar Kieran due the work he carried out on the Motte in recent years, and his lecture on ‘Granard Motte & Bailey’ which will be held on Friday, 28 August at 8.00pm in Granard Library, should be of great interest to everyone. All are welcome and refreshments will be served.

Pilgrimage to Knock

The Diocesan Pilgrimage to Knock takes place on Sunday 6 September. Ceremonies commence at 2.30pm with Anointing of the Sick. Mass will be celebrated at 3.00pm. Motor Neurone

The Ballinalee, Killoe and Newtownforbes Friends of Motor Neurone Committee are running their annual fundraiser again this year. Motor Neurones Monster Barn Dance on Friday 28 August 2015 at Rawle’s Ballinalee Music by Nite Fever, Sharon Turley and many more on the night.  Doors open at 9pm.  Tickets €5 on sale now. Colmcille Ploughing Association

The association are holding their annual ploughing and field day on Sunday, 30 August on the lands of the Bleakley Family Smear Aughnacliff. In conjunction with the normal ploughing and side shows there will be an open day in Bleakley’s Mill, where people can witness for themselves how the Mill worked and gain a piece of history from days gone by. It promises to be a great family fun day for everyone so make sure and come along!


Bingo continues each Wednesday night in the Community Centre Granard at 8.45pm. Main Jackpot is €20K in 42 calls or less. Second Jackpot is building up nicely also. Proceeds go to Abbeylara and Granard G.A.A. Clubs. Your continued support is much appreciated.

Siopa Lus na Greine

Our Siopa is open Thursday, Friday and Saturday, 10am – 5pm. Thank you for your continued support. We welcome your cast offs, bric –a – brac etc. these can be dropped to An Siopa. All proceeds from An Siopa go directly to the Centre to fund projects in the Community.

Ardscoil Padraig

Ardscoil Phádraig are currently finalising their enrolment process for QQI Level 5 courses in Animal Care and Nursing Studies. These QQI Level 5 courses are suitable for both school leavers and mature students who wish to return to education and gain new skills or employment. Wedding bells

Congratulations to Michael O’Hara, Killasonna and Valerie Flynn, Granard who were married in St. Mary’s Church, Granard on Friday, 7 August last. We wish them every happiness for the future.

Fr. John Joe Jodie King. C.S.S.P.

The death occurred on Tuesday last 11 August of Fr. John Joe (Jodie) King C.S.S.P. Kimmage Dublin and formerly of Main Street. Granard. Requiem Mass was celebrated on Friday morning in the Church of the Holy Spirit, Kimmage Manor followed by burial in Granardkille old cemetery. May he rest in peace. Sympathy is extended to his nieces nephews relatives and friends together with his Spiritan confreres. He was a popular figure in town following his retirement and always had a friendly word for everyone he met. when in failing health he returned to Kimmage to his fellow confreres. Fr. Jodie was the last surviving member of the King family.

Maureen Smyth RIP

The death of Maureen Smyth, Beechview, Abbeylara occurred peacefully at Mullingar Regional Hospital on Thursday last, 13 August. Her body reposed at the family home on Thursday night and Friday until removal to St. Bernard’s Church Abbeylara. Funeral Mass was celebrated on Saturday at 11.00am followed by burial in adjoining cemetery. May her gentle soul rest in peace. Predeceased by her sons Richard and Kevin. She will be sadly missed by her husband Bernard; daughter Fiona; sons Brian, Barry, Cormac and Colm; son-in-law James. Her sisters, brothers, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law and extended family circle friends and neighbours.

Paddy Nally R.I.P.

The death of Paddy Nally, Lismacaffrey occurred peacefully at Mullingar Regional Hospital on Friday, 14 August. His body reposed at Our Lady’s Manor, Edgeworthstown on Saturday evening followed by removal to St. Mary’s Church, Boherquill. Funeral Mass was celebrated at 12 noon on Sunday followed by burial in Milltown Cemetery, Rathconrath. May he rest in peace. Sympathy is extended to his sisters, Kathleen Kavanagh, (Ballymore), May A and Chris; his brother-in-law, nephews, nieces and the extended family circle neighbours and friends.
