We were all deeply saddened at the passing of our dear friend Patricia Lovett. Patricia was part of all the work of Rath Mhuire Centre for almost 30 years and we will miss her dearly. Her dignity and grace, courage and wisdom, gentleness and humour brightened all our days. May she rest in peace.

National Play Day

The aim of National Play Day is to help increase awareness of the importance of play. The theme for 2015 is ‘Natural Play’. The event takes place at the Mall Sport Complex Longford on this Saturday, 27 June 2015 from 2.00pm to 5.30pm. Free activities include: Face Painting, Arts and Crafts, Farm Animals, Puppet show, Sports, Outdoor games, Bouncy Castles, Dress up Corner, and lots more. All are welcome.

Vincent’s the SVP shop is open at Lower Main Street, Granard with plenty of bargains for everyone. Opening hours: Monday morning from 10.00am to 2.00pm. Streete Parish Park

The annual All-Ireland Vintage Day takes place in Streete Parish Park on Sunday, 12 July. The event is host to the All-Ireland Irish Vintage Society National Rally. For further details contact Brian Nerney on 086 2596656 or email:

The guild are having their annual outing on Thursday, 16 July starting off in Athlone with a cruise on the Shannon to Clonmacnoise for a guided tour; return to Athlone for shopping followed by evening meal in Glasson. GAA Qualifiers

Congratulations to Longford on their win over Carlow on Saturday last on a scoreline of Longford 2-15 to Carlow’s 1-8. Nice to see the St. Mary’s man, Tommy Gallagher getting a chance and Abbeylara man, Fergal Battrim getting a start.


Granard Motte Community Enterprise Ltd is currently circulating tickets for their annual membership draw. Tickets cost €100 each. Your continued support will be appreciated. Achievements to date: The group have completed the purchase of the property for €265,000. Raised €105,000; Borrowed €175,000 to complete purchase (to be repaid over the next 6 years) completed extensive feasibility study. Presently preparing plans for development of the Visitor / Educational Centre which will be Self-Sustaining. The hope is to have the Visitor centre up and running in the next 3 years.

Good 2Talk

Is an effective and accessible Counselling and Psychotherapy support service set up in the Midlands of Longford and Westmeath to tackle the growing issue of suicide and general mental health issues among our communities. Good2Talk is a non-profit organisation with charitable status. This means we ask clients for a contribution of €25 per session, however, our service is free in crises situations such as suicide ideation and we do consider client means during our assessments. Congratulations to Fr. Seamus O’Rourke who was ordained to the Priesthood by Bishop Francis Duffy on Sunday last in St. Mel’s Cathedral Longford. This was the first ordination in the newly refurbished Cathedral. Fr. Seamus will celebrate Mass here in St. Mary’s Church Granard on Saturday 27 June at 8.30pm. Refreshments will be served afterwards in the Community Centre Barrack Street. All are welcome.


Sympathy is extended to Liam Tully and family, Cartron, Granard on the death of Liam’s father, Willie Tully, Esker, Ballinalee who died at his home on Saturday last, 20 June following an illness bravely borne. Funeral Mass was celebrated on Tuesday, 23 June. May he rest in peace.

Sympathy is extended to Rosemary Killian Johnston on the death of her Uncle, Tommy Killian, Templeton Glebe, Killashee who died on 19 June. May he rest in peace.

Historical Society

St. Christopher’s Services

Bingo continues each Wednesday night in the Community Centre, Granard at 8.45pm. Jackpot is €20K. Proceeds go to Abbeylara and Granard G.A.A. Clubs. Your continued support is much appreciated.


The death of Doreen Farrelly, (nee Hunt), Barrack Street, Granard occurred peacefully on 18 June at Mullingar Regional Hospital. Predeceased by her husband Harry. She will be sadly missed by her brother Desmond, sister-in-law Grace, brother-in-law Oliver Farrelly, extended family circle, her many good friends and kind neighbours. May she rest in peace. Her body reposed at Smith’s Funeral Home on Friday evening. Removal to St. Mary’s Church on Saturday for 11am concelebrated funeral Mass followed by burial in Purth Cemetery.

Ardscoil Phádraig

Are currently finalising their enrolment process for FETAC Level 5 courses in Animal Care and Nursing Studies. These FETAC Level 5 courses are suitable for both school leavers and mature students who wish to return to education and gain new skills or employment. Siopa Lus na Greine

Our Siopa is open Thursday, Friday and Saturday, 10am – 5pm. Thank you for your continued support. We welcome your cast offs, bric –a – brac etc. these can be dropped into the Centre or to An Siopa. All proceeds from An Siopa go directly to the Centre to fund projects in the Community.


Bunlahy Area Action Group are hosting their annual Fundraising Barbecue in Creegan’s of Bunlahy on Sunday, 28 June starting at 4.30pm. Music on the day by Rhythm and Sticks. Your support would be greatly appreciated.

Men’s Shed
