I.C.A.: National recruitment day takes place on Saturday 2 March and the guild will have awareness day in town. The March monthly meeting will take place in the Credit Union meeting room at 8.00pm. on Thursday 7 March. Please note the entrance is at the rear of building. Guest speaker will be Ms Lucy Callaghan. This is an open meeting and everyone is welcome to attend.

Tourism Project: The next public meeting of the group working on this project will be held on Thursday 7 March at 8pm in the Community Centre, Barrack Street. Much work has been done to date but much remains to be done. Our monthly draw will also take place on the night. We welcome everyone to attend and as our feasibility study is still on-going we welcome ideas for the project. So please come along. This project is for the community and by the community.  

St. Mary’s GAA: The eagerly awaited launch of St. Mary’s GAA History Book takes place in the Clubhouse, Higginstown, Granard on Friday, 15 March at 7pm. This book chronicles 125 years of Granard GAA since it’s formation in 1888 to the present day and in fact was the first GAA Club to be established in Co. Longford. Everyone welcome to attend.

Agricultural Show: A meeting of Granard Agricultural Show will take place on Thursday night 7 March at 9pm in J.V. Donohoe’s Lounge to discuss sale of tickets and preparation for Card Drive the next night in J.V.’s at 9pm with proceeds in aid of our 2013 show.  Please note meeting on Thursday night instead of usual Wednesday nights.

Fianna Fail: The AGM of Granard Fianna Fail will take place on Tuesday 5 March, in John V. Donohoe’s at 8.30pm. All members are requested to attend. New members are very welcome. 

Coolamber I.C.A.: The guild will hold their next meeting on Tuesday 5 March in Streete Parish Centre at 8.00pm Guest speaker on the night will be Dalia Smelstoriute who will speak on environmental issues. All members are requested to attend and new ones are always welcome.

Make of Wish Foundation: Bank of Ireland are proud to be sponsors of the Make a Wish Foundation Charity again this year and on a local level the staff of Bank of Ireland in Granard are hosting a coffee morning on Friday 8 March where they will be selling cakes/buns/muffins and tea and coffee. There will also be cake cutters and beautiful aprons for sale for budding bakers. This is a chance for staff and customers to have a cup of tea together and more importantly to raise much needed funds to help this charity who are helping to make dreams come true for children all across the country who are in heartbreaking circumstances. Any support that you can give would be greatly appreciated.

Reaching-Out Initiative: An exciting new project is being launches in Longford Library on 5 March by Henry Healy a relative of President Barack Obama. Longford Reaching Out aims to help local communities to make connections with the descendants of people who emigrated from their area. A key part of the Initiative is training in genealogy and a pilot training programme will be run after Easter. For more information do come along to the Library at 7.30pm on Tuesday 5 March. New Adult Karate Class: Due to the huge success of the children’s karate class at the Canon Kelly Memorial Hall, Granard a new Adult class has started due to popular demand. Wednesday 6-7pm. Night Vigil: The next First Friday/Saturday  all night reparation vigil to the Sacred and Immaculate Hearts of Jesus and Mary is scheduled for Friday the 1st March commencing at 10 pm in the Chapel of Our Lady’s Manor, Edgeworthstown. We are also very pleased that a reparation vigil has also commenced in St Anne’s, (former Mercy Convent) Convent Lane, Mohill at the same date and time. For further information contact 086 0405621.

Easter Festival: On Easter weekend – Saturday 30 and Sunday 31 March, all roads will lead to Granard for the Easter Festival! An exciting schedule of events is planned for the weekend including a 5K Run, Novelty Tug-O-War, Easter Egg Hunt, Parade, Artisan Food Fare, live music and lots of children’s entertainment! All are welcome. Watch this space in the coming weeks for more details on events!

Table Quiz: A table quiz to help defray costs of running the above festival will take place in Fay’s Bar on this Friday 1st March. Your support will be greatly appreciated.

Country Markets: Granard Country Market held their annual general meeting on Friday morning last and the following officers were elected for the coming year. Chairperson Alan Harrison, Vice chairperson Maggie Norton. Secretary Angela Durkin. Treasurer Pat Wilson . Assistant Treasurer Evelyn Stafford, P.R.O. Eileen Kilbride. Controller Ann O’Hara. The market is open from 8-30am to 11-00am every Friday morning in the Town Hall. Watch out for Mother’s Day, St.Patrick’s Day and Easter goodies over the coming weeks.

Pitch & Putt: Granard Club would like to thank all who renewed their membership on Sunday last, also welcome to the new members which looks good for the future of the club. Nappy Appeal: Melissa Martin is doing a “Nappy Appeal” on behalf of Vesnova Orphanage for Mentally Ill Children in Belarus. Any donations of nappies wipes or nappy creams would be much appreciated and can be left in Panache Beauty Salon, Main Street, Granard or Granard Branch Library for collection by 5 March. Folk Group Re-Union: St. Mary’s Folk Group Re-union (1975-1990 approx). We are hoping to have a get-together on the afternoon of Saturday, 6 July in Granard. We would appreciate if you could pass on a Cead Mile Failte to family members/friends who were part of this group and who now are sway from home. “Reminiscence, Refreshments Rehearsal” are the key words for the Gathering. Recent Deaths: The death of Patrick (Packie) Small late of Colmcille Terrace, Granard, occurred recently in Florida U.S.A. Funeral Mass was celebrated in St. Mary’s Church, Granard on Sunday at 1pm. Burial of ashes took place afterwards in Granardkille cemetery. May he rest in peace. Sympathy is extended to his sons, Patrick James and Ignatius, grandchildren daughters-in-law relatives and many friends. The death of Paud McGowan, Creevy, Granard and formerly of Kilcogy, Co. Cavan occurred recently. Removal took place from McMahon’s funeral home Cavan on Sunday, 24 February to Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Mullahoran. Funeral Mass was celebrated on Monday at 12 noon followed by burial in adjoining graveyard. May he rest in peace.

Sympathy: Sympathy is extended to Bishop Colm O’Reilly on the death of his sister, Maura Griffin in Ballyhaunis last week. Sympathy is extended to Bridie Kiernan, Dalystown, Granard and Bess Lynch, Creevy, Granard on the death of their brother, Peter Kiernan, Culray, Aughnacliff. May he rest in peace. Midlands Living Links: If you have the experience of losing a loved one through suicide and would like to connect with others who have gone through the same experience Midlands Living Links is running an eight week bereavement support course. An introduction night with regards to setting up a support group will be held in Lus na Gréine FRC on Tuesday 12 March at 7.30 pm. Meeting: Longford Mother to Mother breastfeeding support group will meet on Wednesday 6th March in Ballinalee Health centre from 10.30am to 12.30pm.
