The committee are hosting a major fundraising night at Longford Greyhound Track on this Friday, 15 May. First Race starting at 8p.m. Tickets are priced at €10.00 and are available from any committee member and also at various locations around the town. Raffle on the night with some excellent prizes. This is expected to be a big social gathering of all members and supporters of Granard Agri-Show and promises to be a great night with a few surprises in store, so why not come along and join in the fun.
Granard I.C.A. guild at their May meeting in the Board Room of Granard Credit Union. In the beautiful surroundings we had a most enjoyable evening celebrating Bealtaine with an English/Irish quiz kindly compiled by Ann Donohoe. Amazing how all the basic Irish we learned in school comes back to us and a good exercise to keep our native language alive. Next meeting takes place on 3 June.
How to build a Wormery

St. Mel’s Cathedral
The re-dedication of St. Mel’s Cathedral takes place on Sunday, 17 May and is looked forward to by all the people of diocese of Ardagh and Clonmacnoise but especially the parishioners of St. Mel’s who were without their church for five years. Each parish in the diocese has been allotted a number of tickets for the official blessing. Congratulations to everyone involved in bringing this day to fruition.
Granard Area Action Group held their AGM on Wednesday 6 May. The following officers were elected for the coming year: Chairman: John Maguire; Vice Chairperson: Mary McElvaney; Secretary: Kathleen McGahern; Assistant Secretary: Mary Smith; Treasurer: David Reynolds; Assistant Treasurer: Tommy Stokes; PRO: John Maguire. The group are sponsors of the local Community Employment Project funded by DSP and assist various groups in the parishes of Abbeylara Granard and Mullinalaghta. The group are also responsible for The Community Services Programme funded by Popal at Canon Kelly Community Sport Hall. In all these two projects bring a grand total of in excess of €500K to the local economy.
We welcome Dublin based Inspector Seamus McCormack who officially took up his position as new Superintendent to Granard last week. He replaces Superintendent Murphy who was assigned to Dublin’s Divisional Traffic Unit in March. We wish both men all the very best in their new roles.
Congratulations to Mrs Marion Kiernan, Barrack Street, Granard who has been appointed Director of Nursing in Cavan / Monaghan region and has taken up her new role last week. We wish Marion many successful years in her new position.
Congratulations to Tara Burke, Rathbracken, Granard and Philip Duffy, Edgeworthstown who were married in St. Mary’s Church, Granard on Saturday, 2 May. A reception for family and friends followed in Hotel Kilmore, Cavan. We wish the happy couple many happy years for the future.
The death of John Pat Kelly, 4 Colmcille Terrace, Granard occurred peacefully at St. Joseph’s Care Centre, Dublin Road, Longford on Saturday, 9 May. His body reposed at St. Joseph’s hospital chapel on Sunday afternoon where large crowds came to pay their respects to one of Granard’s most loved characters. On arrival to St. Mary’s Church, Granard, past and present St. Mary’s G.A.A. players and officials formed a guard of honour. Funeral Mass was celebrated on Monday morning followed by burial in Granardkille old cemetery. May he rest in peace. Sympathy is extended to his sister Rosie, brothers Patsy, Francie, Kevin and Tommy. His nieces, nephews, sisters-in-law, relatives and many friends.
The untimely death of Peter Watters, oldest son of Ann and Eugene Watter,s Curryline, Newtownforbes occurred on Wednesday, 6 May. His body reposed at the family home until removal to St. Mary’s Church, Newtownforbes for concelebrated funeral Mass on Saturday morning followed by burial in the local cemetery. May his gentle young soul rest in peace. Sympathy is extended to his parents, his sister Joanne, brothers Stephen and Anthony and extended family circle and friends.
Greville Golf Club
The Greville Arms held there second outing in Athlone golf course on the 18/4/15. The weather on the day was windy but yet very sunny making play more enjoyable but still challenging. The course itself was in great condition as all golfers enjoyed the day. Team winners - Kevin Tighe - Martin Reilly - and Martin Sheridan. Nearest to the pin - Martin Reilly. Longest drive - Colm Fagan. Category B winner - John O’Hara. Second overall - Colm Fagan. 1st overall - Kevin Tighe. Overall the day was good and we enjoyed the golf.
We would also like to say well done to Mick Murray on winning the Sach Central Vacuum Systems competition recently in Longford and now goes forward to represent Longford Golf Club in the National P.G.A. Tankard competition. Best of luck Mick.

The annual Open Air Festival in Dring due to be held on Sunday, 31 May has been postponed for this year. The annual church gate collection for St. Christopher’s will be held that weekend at both churches. We would like to thank all our loyal supporters and look forward to next year’s festival.

A group of Spanish students are hoping to attend a Summer camp in Cnoc Mhuire, Granard from 4 - 24 July. This will be the first year for the camp in the Granard area and is an extension of the successful Moyne C.S. Summer Camp which has been running since 2011. On Sunday 31 May next a Poker classic will be held in the Breffni Arms Hotel in Arva starting at 6.00pm. This Classic is organised by friends of the late Martin Cadden and all proceeds go to the Kevin Bell Repatriation Fund. All support will be welcome.

Northern Gaels the underage footballers of Abbeylara and Mullinalaghta are holding a novel fundraising event on Sunday 31 May at 5pm. A “Duck Race” will take place on the river at Derragh. Parish Centre Abbeylara
The open evening for the new Parish Centre for the people of the parish and friends will take place on Friday 29 May. Format for the evening is viewing; celebration of Mass and blessing followed by refreshments. On Friday 12 June a dance with Derek Ryan and his Band will take place. Dancing from 11pm to 1am. Full bar extension.
