A Christmas childrens disco will be held at the Dean Egan Library on Friday next 19th December from 8 – 10p.m. This event is being run by Foroige and the cost is just €5. Call 09064-32691 for further information. Everyone welcome.

Christmas at St. Matthews Church

Mass on Christmas Eve will be celebrated at 11pm. On Christmas Day, Mass times are 9am and 11.30am. Eucharistic Adoration in the church is now cancelled until Tuesday 6th January when it will take place for a reduced schedule 3pm to 6pm. On Friday 2nd January, Mass will be at the later time of 11am.

St. Matthews Folk Band

Please note change of rehearsal day. Practices will be every Monday at 6.30p.m. in the Church, commencing from 5th January.

Festival of Music

Tang Folk Group are presenting “Peace at Christmas” in Tang Church on Sunday next, 21st December at 8p.m. All are welcome to attend.

Fr. Liam Lawton

The infamous singer, will be performing in the Sacred Heart Church, Roscommon on Wednesday, 17th December at 7.30p.m. Special guests - Derek Campbell, Roxboro School Choir and the Roscommon Solstice Choir. Tickets €20 with proceeds in aif of “Join our Boys Trust”.

Ballymahon Defibrillator Group

Provides training free of charge to Ballymahon, Forgney and Tang people and other people who have enquired to the training. They are a totally voluntary group who rely on people’s good will to help them with fundraising. Their main aim for 2015 is to try and get a new AED at Innyside Filling Station and have enough funds to be able to keep their training equipment up to a high standard. Darren Mulleady, the main trainer is calling everyone to join him and do the women’s mini-marathon. Men will have to dress up as women to compete. So in 2015, think local and think of Ballymahon Defibrillator Group. If you would like to join them at the Marathon please contact Darren on 086-1704394.

Leo Casey History Group

Their latest book Ballymahon “A Journey back in time”, was published and launched in November 2013. As Christmas now approaches, the History Group’s members would like to recommend this fascinating pictorial record of Ballymahon people and events of yesteryear, it would make a wonderful Christmas gift for anyone far from home or connected in any way with our town. Books are still available while stocks last at Hanly’s Newsagents and Nallys Service Station on the Longford road

Irish Blood Transfusion Service

You are invited to give blood this week at the Blood Donation Clinic in The Longford Arms Hotel, Wednesday 17th December at 4.30p.m. to 8p.m. and Thursday, 18th December from 4.30p.m. to 8p.m. The Transfusion Service urgently need donors.

Death of John Harkins

We were all saddened to hear of the death on December 7th of John Harkins, Tang and formerly of Lifford in Co Donegal at Mullingar General Hospital, pre-deceased by his wife, Dolly and daughter Nellie. John was a grand, quiet gentleman who worked with the Board of Works for a long number of years and was always involved in local community affairs. We extend our sincere sympathy to his son Edward, daughters Margaret Doonan and Mary Stone, brother Denis and to all his relatives and many friends. May God grant rest to his Soul.

Christmas Day Run

The annual Christmas Day Run/Walk from Newtowncashel to Lanesboro in aid of Multiple Sclerosis, takes place again this year and sponsorship cards are available. The Walk commences at 11.45a.m. and the Runners will start their run at 12.15p.m. Sponsorship Cards are available from O’Briens in Lanesboro or any of the organising committee.

The following Church Services will be held in the Ardagh Group of Parishes during the Christmas season, to which all are welcome. Sunday December 21st: Carol Service in Kenagh at 11.30a.m. Christmas Eve: Holy Communion in Tashinney Church at 7p.m. Holy Communion in Kenagh Church at 9p.m. Christmas Day: Holy Communion in Ardagh Church at 10a.m. Holy Communion in Ballymahon Church at 11.30a.m. Sunday December 28th: United Service for the Group of Parishes in Ballymahon Church at 11a.m. (please note time). Private Holy Communions for Christmas to the sick and housebound and to those in Nursing Homes will be administered by the Rector during the two weeks before Christmas day.

Death of James Draper

The death occurred in England of James Draper, formerly Creevaghmore. James was a regular visitor to Ballymahon down the years visiting his family and many friends here. We extend our deepest sympathy to his sisters Maureen Donlon, Ballymahon, Marie Clarke, Creevaghmore and Ann Farrell, Cloncullen and to all the Draper family and to his relatives and friends. Death of Kieran Eustace

It was with deep regret that we learnt of the death on Thursday last at Mullingar General Hospital of Kieran Eustace, Newtowncashel in his late ‘seventies. A strong and long-time member of the Fianna Fail party, Kieran was a regular visitor to the Club’s meetings in Ballymahon down the years, he was always very highly thought of within the party, a true gentleman. Ballymahon Fianna Fail wish to extend their deepest sympathy to Kieran’s brothers Des, Fr. Louis and Gerry, sister Eithne Kane, sisters in law, and all his relatives and wide circle of friends. May he rest in peace.

Death of Michael Skelly

Surprise Birthday party

Congratulations to Mrs Lily Egan, Leo Casey Tce., who recently celebrated her 80th Birthday at a surprise party in Cooney’s Hotel with her family and many friends. We hope Lily enjoyed the night and wish her good health and happiness in the years ahead.

Death of John Joe Sweeney

We wish to extend our deepest sympathy to Paddy Sweeney, St. Matthews Park on the death last week of his brother John Joe, Liscahill, Edgeworthstown at Mullingar General Hospital, also to John Joe’s sister-in-law Eva, nephews Liam and Tony, niece Edel, to his cousins, neighbours and many friends. Many people from the Ballymahon area attended John Joe’s Funeral Mass on Saturday morning last in St. Mary’s Church in Edgeworthstown. Aged 82,John Joe was a highly respected member of the local farming community and well-liked by everyone. May he rest in peace

G.A.A. appoint new Manager

80th Birthday

Congratulations to Sr. Assumpta Falkner, former Principal at Ballymahon Mercy Secondary School, who recently celebrated her 80th Birthday at a surprise party in Skelly’s. Many of her former teaching colleagues came back to join in the celebrations, together with members of the Sisters of Mercy congregation and many other friends. We send our good wishes to Sr. Assumpta for the future.

St. Mel’s Cathedral re-opens

The newly restored St. Mel’s Cathedral in Longford will re-open to the public on Saturday next, 20th December from 10.30am to 9.30pm and it is also open on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday 21st to 23rd from 8am to 6pm. It will be open on Christmas Eve from 8a.m. onwards. On Christmas Day opening times are from 8am to 6pm.

“The GAA in my Time”

Congratulations to Eugene McGee whose new book “The GAA in My Time” was launched recently by Mick O’Dwyer at Croke Park.A must read, the book contains many stories that will resonate with Longford readers. We wish Eugene, who is a former Manager of the Offaly winning All-Ireland team, the very best of luck with his publication. It would make a great Christmas present for someone.
