There was deep sadness in the area at the death of Bertie Kiernan, Toome which occurred at Tullamore General Hospital on Thursday 15th August. Suffering from a serious illness, Bertie had been in failing health for some months. A much respected member of the nursing staff at St. Loman’s Hospital, Mullingar, he retired some short few years ago. Unfortunately he did not get that much time to enjoy his retirement. He was a great GAA supporter and a keen follower of St. Columba’s and the Blue and Gold of his native county. He very rarely missed a home or away game in which either team was involved. A staunch Fianna Fáil supporter he was a familiar figure in the local polling station on election days. He enjoyed the banter during any conversation about politics. Of a pleasant personality his passing will leave a void among his family, friends and neighbours. His remains were removed to St. Columba’s Church on Saturday evening. Funeral followed Requiem Mass at noon on Sunday. The large attendance on both occasions was a fitting tribute to the esteem in which the deceased was held. Predeceased by his wife Maureen, he is survived by his daughters Aisling, Ruth, Yvonne and Siobhán, brother Noel, sisters Ita and Agnes, partner Mary Cawley, sons-in-law Rodney and Joe, granddaughter Grace, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nephews and nieces to whom our sympathy is extended.
