Granard February 23



St. Mary’s GFC Minor Club is holding a Table Quiz in Fay’s Bar on Friday 25 February 2011 at 9.00pn. Entry Fee 40 euro per table of four. First Prize 100 euro. Second Prize 40 euro. Raffles and Spot Prizes on the night. Please come along and join in the fun.


Nice to see a full house again on Wednesday night last. This week’s Jackpot is 6,900 euro. A special thank you to everybody involved in the running of this Bingo and to all the people who support us every week.


Competition on Sunday morning at 11.00am weather permitting also Juvenile Competition on Saturday morning at 11.00am. Membership is now due for the year and can be paid to Raymond Fay Rathcronan Patrick Maguire Roy Burke or any committee member. Pitch & Putt is a very pleasant pass time and for about 1 euro per week you can get many hours of enjoyment and relaxation.


Granard Branch of CCE are holding an Irish Night in Farrell’s Ballinalee on Saturday night 26 February to raise much needed revenue for the Co. Longford Fleadh to be held in Granard on Saturday and Sunday 7 and 8 May. A great night is assured. Please support.


Coolamber Guild: The next meeting of Coolamber Guild will take place on Wednesday 2 March at 8.00pm in Streete Parish Park. Please note change of date. Guest speaker will be Sgt. John Connolly Crime Prevention Officer Mullingar. All members are requested to attend.

Granard Guild: The Federation Meeting takes place in Ennybegs on Monday 28 February at 7.00pm Granard ICA ladies will meet at Community Centre Barrack Street at 6.30pm sharp and share travel by cars. On Monday night 14 February the ladies commenced the craft Decoupage. Each choose the pictures they would like to do and were given a list of craft items to have for the next class on Monday 7 March at 7.00pm in the Adult Learning Centre Main Street Granard. There will be 5 more classes after that. Some members did Decoupage before and the remainder are beginners but this will be no problem to the tutor Angela Hoare, Ballymahon who did great work with us two years ago, therefore, Angela is back by popular request.


Many thanks to everyone who supported the recent Mater Heart Badge Day also thanks to Supervalu Granard for their co-operation. The money raised will be used for screening of families who have lost a loved one to Sudden Adult Death Syndrome. 250 euro has been forwarded to the Mater Hospital Foundation. Unfortunately this clinic gets no Government funding so fundraising is essential.


Ladies only competition in Streete Parish Park Complex on Sunday 6 March 2011 at 2.00pm. competing for the Mary O’Hara Memorial Trophy. All ladies in Westmeath League are eligible Entry fee €10 per person. Entries close at 1.45pm on the day. Please contact Martin on 0857236101.

The AGM of the Greville Arms Golf Society, Granard, will be held in the hotel on Monday 28th Feb at 9pm. A full attendance of members is expected.


Congratulations to Eileen Sheridan, Lisryan and Nancy Carr, Granard who having previously obtained the JEB Diploma in Information Technology progressed to completing the Train the Trainer Diploma in order to make themselves more employable. They each achieved Distinctions in their examinations and it is a credit to them. Both ladies are employed by Granard Area Action Group and are currently based at the Adult Learning Centre, Granard.


Congratulations to Ballymore GFC who won the Novelty Act in the Co. Final of Senior Scor in Ballinamuck on Saturday night last. They now go on to represent Longford in the Leinster Final.


On Sunday 13 March at 3.00pm a sponsored walk from Granard to Abbeylara and back will take place. All proceeds to the Irish Heart Foundation Stroke Unit. Your support will be appreciated. Sponsorship cards available Phone 043-6687594 or Josie O’Rourke on 086 3305933.


Next meeting will take place on 24 February in Rath Mhuire Resource Centre at 2.30pm. Please remember to bring any photographs you may have as we will be gathering and cataloguing same. All of which are very fond reminders of the good work and good memories over the last number of years. We will also be having some crochet so if you happen to have any of the necessary materials you can bring them along if not same will be provided. Thanks to Christine from Citizen’s Information who attended our last meeting and gave an interesting session on the “Fair Deal” programme. New members are always very welcome. Prayer Group meetings take place every Monday evening in Rath Mhuire Resource Centre. This year the group are proudly celebrating their 10th Anniversary and are always delighted to welcome new people. For further information contact Brigid @ 043-6686759.


The next meeting of the group will take place on Monday 28 February in Rath Mhuire Resource Centre at 3.00pm. The aim of the group is to promote creative writing in an enjoyable and relaxed setting. For more information contact Jackie at 043-6686309.

The Active Age Group meetings for March will take place on 1st 15th and 29th in the Dolmen Centre Aughnacliff at 2.00pm. The activities for these meetings include a visit from the Community Physiotherapist , Citizens Information Officer as well a Yoga session. We will also be planning a trip to Longford Megabowl. A representative from Longford Community Resources Ltd will be in attendance at Granard Area Action Group office Main Street Granard each Tuesday morning from 10.00am to 1.00pm. If you have an idea for a project within Co. Longford and would like to develop your local village /area you or your group may be eligible for RDP grant assistance. The death of Anne Murphy (nee Sullivan) Trillic-aTemple Longford and formerly of Cloonagh Dring and Ballinacross Granard took place at Portiuncla Nursing Home Multyfarnham on 15 February. Removal took place from the nursing home Oratory to St. Bernard’s Church Abbeylara on Friday evening. Funeral Mass was celebrated on Saturday followed by burial in Colmcille Cemetery. May she rest in peace. Sympathy is extended to all the Murphy and Sullivan families and especially her son David daughter in law Margaret and family Carragh Granard.

The untimely death of Sean (Fred) Burke Springtown Granard and Longford took place on 16 February in Longford. His body reposed at the family home until Saturday evening followed by removal to St. Mary’s Church. Funeral Mass was celebrated on Sunday at 11.30am followed by burial in Granardkille cemetery. May he rest in peace. Sympathy is extended to his parents Tom and Sheila brother Mark sister Claire and extended family.
