The Granard Branch of St Christopher’s Services have organised a play by Seamus O’Rourke  - â€œPadraig  Potts Guide to Walking” on the 20 February in the Community Centre, Granard at 8.30pm. There will be a raffle and door prizes. Tickets cost €10 and are available from Committee members or on the door. Please support us and have a great night.

Tea/Coffee Morning

Show your love for Family Carers this Valentine’s week at the Longford Carer’s Association tea/coffee morning. This Thursday morning, 12 February from 10am to 12pm in the Family Centre, St Mel’s Road, Longford. Your support will be appreciated.

Done and Dusted Nan

Abbeylara GAA Drama group are presenting their annual production Crover House, Mountnugent on this Friday and Saturday, 13 and 14 February. This year’s production promises to be bigger and better than ever. A night not to be missed. Music and dancing on Saturday night with Cheap Whiskey. Tickets are €15 including supper are available from any of the club officials or cast members.


Granard guild held their monthly meeting on Thursday, 5 February. Guest speaker was Mary Henry who gave a very informative talk on Living with Arthritis and managing pain. Guild members travelling to the Federation Table Quiz in Killashee on Tuesday, 17 February are requested to meet at the Community Centre at 7.30pm. Tables of 3 are €30. The annual Diocesan Pilgrimage to Lourdes takes place from Wednesday, 27 May to Monday, 1 June 2015. Departing from Knock Airport. Sympathy is extended to Catherine Sheridan and family, Carragh, (Abbeylara Road), Granard on the death of her mother, Kate Swarbrigg, Station Road, Cootehill who died on 6 February. May she rest in peace. Sympathy is extended to Mae Larkin and family, Aughabrack, Granard on the death of her mother, Peggy Reilly, Loughpark, Castlepollard who died on 7 February. May she rest in peace. Sympathy is extended to Annie Reilly and family, Cloughernal, Granard on the death of her sister, Bridie O’Donohoe, Tramore Road, Cork who died on 1 February. A meeting of Granard Buttermarket Committee will take place on Tuesday, 17 February at 7pm in the offices of Granard Area Action, Main Street, Granard.  A full attendance is requested and new members always welcome.

Country Markets

Granard Country Markets held their annual general meeting in the Greville Arms Hotel on Friday morning last and the following officers were elected for the coming year. Chairperson: Maggie Norton, Secretary: Angela Durkin, Treasurer: Alan Harrison, PRO: Eileen Kilbride, Controller: Breege Mulfaul. To celebrate St. Valentine’s Day there will be a free raffle for all customers on Friday next. There will be Valentine’s cards, gifts and cakes on sale along with the usual products and the market is open from 8.30am to 11.00am on Upper Main Street beside the Post Office.

Rural Transport

Longford Westmeath Community Transport Ltd. Rural Transport “door to door” services have spaces available for any passengers who wish to travel to their local town or village. For this local region of Granard/Abbeylara, there are Friday services into Granard via Robinstown – Abbeylara – Creevy/Cloughernal and in the afternoon via Derragh – Killasonna – Lisryan to Granard. Maria Edgeworth Literary Festival

The annual festival takes place in Edgeworhtstown on Saturday, 9 May 2015 with many events of interest including Historical walks; literary and musical events and lectures. Something of interest for everyone. Further details later.

Moatsider’s Active Retirement Group

Rath Mhuire Men’s Social Club

Historical Society

Meeting Date: Thursday February 23rd at 7.30pm – Rath Mhuire Resource Centre. There has been a fantastic response and interest in the Historical Society and we are planning a range of events for 2015.
