Lotto: The Arva Football Club Lotto draw was held in the Club Rooms on Monday 24th November. Jackpot €7,400 – Numbers drawn 13 / 19 / 24 / 27 – No winner. €50 each – Ben and Amy Lynch, Farrangarve. Sylvette Halliday, Cormore. Aileen Morris, Drumcarey. The Jackpot on Monday night last 1st December was €7,450. Lotto Envelopes can be left in the Letterbox in St Patrick’s Hall next to the National School for collection on Monday evenings and everyone is welcome to attend the draw. G.A.A. Convention: The Cavan County Board GAA will hold their Annual Convention on Thursday night of next week in the Hotel Kilmore. The St Patrick’s Arva Club have nominated Elaine Cully to contest the position of PRO. She has been working on the PR & IT Committee for the past few years with County PRO Declan Woods and along with husband Barry Mc Hugh and other committee members they have undertaken a huge workload. Players and officials will have seen some of this with photographs, Memorabilia, etc in the hallway and meeting rooms in Kingspan Breffni Park. Elaine provides the Twitter update for Cavan Games and has been involved in updating the Cavan Website. On behalf of the club we wish Elaine every success at the Convention.

Race Nite: The Arva GAA Club are holding a Race Nite on 26th December and members are looking for people to support their efforts. It should be a great evenings craic with hopefully lots of people home for the Festive Season and it will provide an ideal opportunity to meet up with old friends. Horses are on sale at €20 each.

U 21 Championship: St Josephs played Castlerahan on Sunday last on the 3G Pitch, Kingspan Breffni Park in the U 21 Championship Semi-Final. In what was a highly charged encounter St Josephs were lucky to get a draw at very end of the game on a score St Joseph’s 1-14 Castlerahan 2-11. Castlerahan opened the scoring in the first minute but St Josephs hit 4 points in the next 11 minutes. Castlerahan had another point in the 13th minute but St Josephs hit two more to lead 0-6 to 0-2 by the 25th minute. A minute later Castlerahan had their first goal followed by a point in the 31st minute while St Josephs replied in the 33rd minute to leave them ahead at the break 0-7 to 1-3. St Josephs had two points after the restart but Castlerahan hit 1-8 by the 53rd minute while St Josephs only managed 0-2 in reply. St Josephs refused to be beaten and scored 1-3 in the last 10 minutes (3 mins extra) to get a well earned replay. Church of the Sacred Heart

Scripture Study Circle meeting will be held in the Sacristy on this Thursday, 4th December at 8pm. This Friday 5th December is the First Friday and the Sick and Housebound will be visited at the usual times. Anniversary Mass on Sunday for our late Curate Fr Sean McGoldrick R.I.P. Monday next 8th December is the Feast of the Immaculate Conception and mass will be celebrated at 10am and 7pm, anyone wishing to be included on the Rota for Mass Readers in 2015 please contact Fr Donald Hannon C.C. on 049 4335 246. Fr Hannon welcomed 23 new Altar Servers to the Church last weekend.

Presentation: On this Friday night – 5th December – a Presentation will be made in the Breffni Arms Hotel, Arva to former County Councillor Mrs Maura Maguire Lynch to mark her retirement from Cavan County Council. Maura had served 15 years on the Council during which time she worked hard for anyone who made contact with her. Maura decided to retire before the last election and her friends from the old Belturbet District Executive decided to honour her and the former Town Councillors from Belturbet – Peggy Gray, John McDonald, Barry Wilson and John Scott. Food will be served from 10.30pm to 11pm and the Presentations will be made at 11.30pm. There is an open invitation to everyone in the community to attend and it should be an enjoyable occasion. Music will be supplied by Ian Corrigan. Admission optional.


St. Mary’s National School, Arva Centenary Book Committee are looking for old photos, work samples, stories, poems etc or anyone that would be willing to talk to them about their memories of school can contact the school on (049) 4335560. Christmas Lights

Arva Area Development Association will switch on Christmas Lights on this Friday, 5th December to provide an inviting atmosphere for all to shop local in Arva. Christmas Tree lights will be switched on by Santa on Saturday of next week 13th December at 4pm. The Christmas Tree is kindly provided by Brady’s of Arva. Children and carol singers will greet Santa’s arrival.

Santa Claus is coming to Arva

On Saturday, 13th December at 4pm Santa arrives at the Market Square, Arva to switch on the Christmas Tree lights and meet all the boys and girls. Santa will distribute toys afterwards in St Patricks Hall Arva. Santa Claus Draw lines €2 each are presently on sale in all the outlets in town. There are general Hamper prizes to be won in the Santa Christmas draw.

Line Dancing

The Breffni Kickers Line Dancing Classes continue each Thursday in the Breffni Arms Hotel, Arva with classes for beginners at 8.30 pm and for the more advanced at 9.30 pm. Come along and enjoy a good night of dancing and fun.

Coffee Morning

Arva Active Age will hold their usual Coffee morning on this Friday, 5th December in the Breffni Arms Hotel, Arva following the 10.00am Mass in the Church of the Sacred Heart. A guest Speaker will attend and all are welcome. There is a trip to the Backstage Theatre on Friday evening with a bus leaving from St Patrick’s Hall at 5.00 pm.

Christmas Party

The Arva Active Age Christmas Party will be held in the Breffni Arms Hotel on Wednesday next, 10th December at 7pm. There will be plenty of music, song and dance and Santa will make his usual appearance and distribute gifts to everyone – admission €10.

Show Society

Arva Agricultural Show Society annual general meeting will take place on Thursday of next week, 11th December 2014 in the Resource Centre, Market Square, Arva at 9pm and all members are requested to attend. The committee also invites anyone who would like to become involved in helping to drive the show forward and improving it to come along also.

The death has taken place at Cavan General Hospital on Sunday, 16th November of Mr Robert (Bob) Blohm, Main Street, Arva and formerly from Sunderland, England. Bob started holidaying in Arva in the late 1980’s and in 1992 he married Patricia Warde. He enjoyed life and had a friendly and outgoing personality. When meeting friends for a couple of drinks where he would debate politics and events in general and loved the fun involved. Bob is survived by his wife Patricia, daughters Louise Anderson and Heather Bennion, step daughters Mary McGlynn and Clara Durkin, step sons Mark, Michael and John Warde, grandchildren, sisters, nieces, nephews relatives and many friends to all of whom we extend sincere sympathy. His remains reposed at Finnegan’s Funeral Home, Dublin Road, Cavan, on the Wednesday evening for Prayer Service. Funeral Service and Cremation followed on Thursday in Mount Jerome Crematorium, Dublin.
