The 62nd Granard Agricultural Show will take place in Higginstown Complex on this Saturday, 19 July. There will be the usual entries of cattle sheep and horses together with the home produce; flowers; arts and crafts. A great family day out with something for everyone. Bus to the Garden Party at An Grianan will depart from the Greville Arms Granard at 11.30am on Friday, 18 July. Members of Granard guild who have volunteered to help out at the Agricultural Show please meet at the complex on Friday evening at 7.00pm and again on Saturday morning.

Tidy Towns

Well done to everyone involved in having the town and approach roads looking so well at present. People are encouraged to keep the town litter free by bringing it home or binning it.

Traders Association

Cllr Micheal Carrigy organised a very well attended meeting on Thursday night, 10 July in the Community Centre, Barrack Street, Granard. The purpose of the meeting was to set up a Traders Association in Granard and discuss the proposed closure of Ulster Bank branch in the town. A number of traders put their names forward to form a committee and to meet with representatives from Ulster Bank, together with the other local politicians who were in attendance - P.J. Reilly; Martin Mulleady and John Duffy. This meeting is due to take place on Friday, 18 July.


Information Stand Edgeworthstown Library & Granard Library. ‘Work4You’ set up by Acquired Brain Injury Ireland provides a free vocational assessment service for individuals who have an acquired brain injury and would like assistance and guidance in returning to work, training or education.  It is free to anyone with an acquired brain injury and in receipt of a payment from the Dept. of Social Protection.  If you are interested in the service or would like more information, Work4You are holding a Pop-Up Information Stand in Edgeworthstown Library on Tuesday, 22nd July 2014 between 11am – 1pm and Granard Library on Tuesday, 22nd July 2014 between 2pm-4pm.  All are welcome.  For further information please call 044 9338773.


Patricia Gorman would like to thank the many people from Granard and further afield who so generously sponsored her recently for the Ladies Mini Marathon in Dublin. A total of €1430 was raised in aid of Crumlin Hospital Cancer Unit. Sincere thanks again to all for continued support over the years.

Breffni Challenge

The annual challenge takes place on Saturday, 2 August and once again local man Johnny Macken Snr. is taking part in his 12th Breffni Challenge. Proceeds are in aid of St. Luke’s Hospital Dublin; NBCRI Galway; Cavan Monaghan Cancer Homecare Association. To date the event has raised over €900K for cancer research. Sponsorship cards are available from Johnny Macken and your support as always will be appreciated.

Day Trip to Dublin

The Longford Senior Championship commences this weekend with St. Mary’s Granard playing Colmcille in Emmet Park, Killoe on Saturday evening. Neighbours Abbeylara v Mullinalaghta in Ballinalee on Friday evening at 8pm. There is a double header in St. Mary’s grounds on Sunday with Clonguish v Dromard and Killoe v Mostrim. Ballymore play Gratten Og in the Intermediate Championship in Ballymahon at 4.30pm on Sunday also. Best of luck to all teams concerned.

The SVP Shop situated at Market Street Granard is open each Friday from 10am to 5.00pm and Saturday 11.00am to 5.00pm. The shop is also open on the first Tuesday of the month from 10.00am to 5.00pm. Bargains galore with something for everyone.

Walking Club

Walking continues as usual every Monday evening meeting at Higginstown Sports Complex at 7pm. A new route every Monday.  New members welcome, young and old. 


Drop in your cast offs, bric-a-brac to us at the Siopa or to Lus na Greine FRC Main Street Granard everything accepted and welcomed. New stock arriving weekly, ladies, gents and children’s clothes all sizes. Beautiful jewellery to finish off that special outfit also shoes and sandals.  Books are clearing at 50 cent each. Due to popular demand the shop is now open Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, 10am to 5pm. All proceeds from the shop go directly and totally to projects in the area.

Rosie Run

The second annual Rosie Run will take place in Gowna on this Sunday, 20 July. Registration will commence at 11.00am and the race will start at 1.00pm from Holy Trinity Church in the village. Entry fee is €10 per adult and €5 for children. Refreshments will be served afterwards in St. Brigid’s Community Centre and presentation of prizes. All proceeds go towards Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association. Your support will be appreciated. Last year’s run raised in excess of €10,000 for the IMNDA.

Cemetery Sundays

Sunday, 27 July, Mass will be celebrated in the New Cemetery, Granardkille at 1.00pm. Sunday, 3 August, Mass in Granardkille Cemetery at 11.30am. It is always a very special occasion when we remember our dead. Sunda, 27 July, Mass will be celebrated at 11.00am in Abbeylara Cemetery. Please have the cemeteries looking well and perhaps people could give a helping to tidy a plot for those who have no relatives left to maintain the graves.

Legion of Mary

The meetings are now held in the Community Centre every Thursday evening at 8.30pm. Anyone wishing to join is welcome to come to the meeting.

Recent Deaths

Sympathy is extended to Brigie Kenny and family Tromra Road; Martina Hynes, Tromra Road and Aine Flynn and family, Ballyboy on the death of their father, Peter Hynes, Ballyboy, Abbeylara and formerly of Killeen, Granard who died on 6 July, peacefully at his residence. Removal took place from his late residence to St. Bernard’s Church, Abbeylara on Tuesday for funeral Mass followed by burial in Abbeylara Cemetery. Peter is also survived by his sons Peter and Pat. May he rest in peace.

The death of Marcella (Sally) Brady, nee Corcoran, Lisrathigan, Coolagherty, occurred on 14 July in St. Vincent’s Private Hospital, following an illness bravely borne. Her body reposed at her late residence and removal took place to Clonbroney Church on Wednesday. Funeral Mass was celebrated on Thursday followed by burial in adjoining cemetery. May she rest in peace. Sympathy is extended to her husband Frank, son Francis, daughters Anne and Teresa.
