Enrolment for September 2014 in Scoil Bhride, Killasonna will take place between 2pm and 3pm on Thursday 6 March 2014.


Tai Chi commences on this Thursday 27 September at 8.15pm in the Credit Union Meeting Room. All those who expressed interest are requested to bring along fees on the night as discussed. The next guild meeting will take place on Thursday 6 March at 8.00pm in the Credit Union Meeting Room. Guest speakers will be from the Longford Branch of the Alzheimer Association. All are welcome.

Agricultural Show

Granard Agricultural Show AGM takes place on next Thursday 6 March in John V’s Lounge at 9pm. All members are requested to attend and new members are very welcome.


The Library continues to operate each Friday at Rath Mhuire Resource Centre Barrack Street Granard from 10.00am to 5.00pm. For further information please phone 087 6151028 on Fridays.

Book Club

Granard Library Book Club continues to meet on the last Wednesday of each month in the Greville Arms Hotel Granard at 11.00am. Next meeting is on this Wednesday morning 26 February. This arrangement is in place while Library is under renovation.

St. Mary’s G.A.A.

Our dinner dance last Saturday night was a great success and by all accounts, everyone who attended enjoyed a good night’s entertainment. St Mary’s would like to thank everyone who helped make the night the success especially the staff of the Piker’s Lodge in Gowna and Paschal, Liz and Davy who provided the music. There was a great response to the draw for the spot prizes and we would like to thank Gerry Walsh, Sinead Fay, McEvoy’s Chemist, P.J. Reilly, Supervalu Granard, Pauline Murphy, Crossroads Inn; Lisryan and Esquire Coffee in Longford for providing all the great prizes. The players were presented with the M. Moran Cup and medals and a 7 x 5 inch photo of the Granard Healy’s team that played in our 125 year celebration game with Arva Davitt’s. Any player that was unable to attend, can contact any member of the executive to arrange collection of their medal/photo. The History Book Committee members (Seamus Finnan, Noel Kelly, Peter Mallon, Sean Tynan, Eileen Connell, Martin Sheridan, Jody Sheridan, Joseph Sheridan, James Cassidy, Rogie Martin, Michael Murray, Andrew Gettings and Matt Smyth) won Clubpersons of the year award.

Walking Club

Granard Happy Heart Walking Club continues each Friday morning with instruction from Brendan Doyle at 10am at Higginstown Complex. This course is in association with Longford Sports Partnership and Brendan is a professional coach. Come and join us and enjoy a great walk. All paces catered to.

“Siopa” Lus na Greine

Our shop opens every Friday and Saturday and the first Tuesday of the month 10.00am to 5.00pm. We have a large stock of clothes of all sizes ranging from 8 – 24 - ladies gents and children. We also have a huge selection of books to suit all tastes 3 for €5. All monies raised in the shop go towards projects in the community.

Moatsiders Active Age: Our next meeting will be on this Thursday 27 February at 2.30pm in Rath Mhuire Centre. We all thoroughly enjoyed our trip to Backstage last Friday evening. New members are always made very welcome. Granard Men’s Social Club: The club is getting very busy with a range of activities being organised for the coming year. The next meeting date is Tuesday March 4th at 12.30 and there is always good food, good company and the afternoon is always a nice social event. Reminder: To all groups for those that are attending the computer/mobile phone sessions in Cnoc Mhuire - first session is on this Wednesday 26 February at 11 - 1pm. Dolmen Centre: All Dolmen groups are well underway for 2014 (Dolmen Daycare- Dolmen Failte Active Age & North Longford Men’s Club) and for any information on the range of activities and services which take place in the Dolmen Centre, or for any of the above activities at Rath Mhuire Centre, please contact Jackie or Lucy at 043-6686309. Bingo continues each Wednesday night in the Community Centre, Barrack Street, Granard at 8.45pm. Proceeds to St. Mary’s GAA and Abbeylara GFC. Your continued support is much appreciated. Jackpot this week is €14,500.

The outreach service continues at the offices of Granard Area Action Group each Thursday morning from 10.30am to 12.30pm. If you require information on any aspects of your rights and entitlements please call in and the information officer will deal confidentially with your query. The service is free to all.

Country Markets

The market continues every Friday beside the Post Office from 8-30am to 11-00am. Usual supplies of home baked fare cards and crafts.

Adult Leaning Centre

Recent deaths

The death of Michael Tully, Rathcor, Granard occurred peacefully at his residence in the loving care of his family on Thursday, 20 February following a long illness. Removal took place from his late residence to St. Mary’s Church Granard on Friday evening. Funeral Mass was celebrated on Saturday at 12 noon followed by burial in Granardkille Cemetery. May he rest in peace. Sympathy is extended to his wife Maryann sons daughters grandchildren sisters Rose Hagan and Annie McKenna nieces nephews in-laws and extended family circle.

Michael Shaughnessy

The death of Michael (Mickey) Shaughnessy, Graffogue, Ballinalee occurred at St. James’s Hospital Dublin on Friday, 21 February following an illness bravely borne. His body reposed at the family home on Saturday and Sunday. Removal took place to St. Mary’s Church, Granard for funeral Mass at 2pm on Monday, followed by burial in Granardkille New Cemetery. May he rest in peace. Sympathy is extended to his wife Kathleen, sons, daughters, grandson, brothers, sisters, his in-laws and many relations and friends and acquaintances in the cattle dealing fraternity.

St. Gertrude McGarry

The death of Sr. Gertrude, late of St. Brigid’s College, Ardagh, occurred at Laurel Lodge, Longford on Friday, 21 February following a long illness. She will be dearly missed by her loving sisters Sr. Maura, Brid and Sr. Eileen and all the Mercy Community. Removal took place from the Nursing Home on Sunday for 2pm Funeral Mass in Ardagh followed by burial in Ardagh Cemetery. May she rest in peace.

Paddy Dempsey

The death of Paddy Dempsey occurred on Saturday, 22 February, following a brief illness. His body reposed at the family home in Coolarty on Sunday and Monday followed by removal to St. Mary’s church, Granard on Monday, 24 February. Funeral Mass was celebrated on Tuesday followed by burial in Granardkille Cemetery. Paddy was a popular figure around town and always had a friendly word for all he met. May he rest in peace. Sympathy is extended to his family and many friends.
