Ita Burns, Ballinagall, Granard who died on Wednesday 1st May, and for Anna McGovern, Carra who died on Thursday 2nd May. May they rest in peace.

Months Memory Mass: Month’s memory mass for John Murren, Carragh, Granard, Co. Longford (RIP) takes place in St. Mary’s Church, Granard, Co. Longford on Saturday evening 18th May at 6pm.

Gun Club: Abbeylara Gun Club held their Annual Clay Pigeon on Sunday May the 5th in the shooting grounds Derragh Abbeylara. The winner of the High Gun Lite Pac Perpetual Cup and prize money of €200 was Richard Rawe, Cavan. Down the Line winners were; 1st €80 - Niall Cumbley Cavan, 2nd €60 - Frank Lyons Legan, 3rd €40 - Adam Howard Drumlish, High Pheasant winners were; 1st €80 - Trevor Reilly Granard, 2nd €60 - Martin Gilchrist Mostrim, 3rd €40 - David Mc Cloughery Cavan, Spring and Teal winners were; 1st €80 - Wayne Carberry Longford, 2nd €60 - Niall Cumbley Cavan, 3rd €40 - David Mc Cloughery Cavan.

Bealtaine Festival: Abbeylara Active Retirement is hosting a tea party on Sunday 19 May at 3pm. Sing song, music, recitation, storytelling etc. Members are invited from other Active Retirement clubs, if you are coming to our party let us know at 087 2510072.

Parish Draw: Many thanks to the 184 people who have joined our parish draw for 2013. Thanks very much also to the collectors. Anyone still wishing to join the draw is welcome. Contact your collector.

World Youth Day 2013: Bright Lights 2013 will take place over the World Youth Day weekend in the beautiful grounds of Aylesford Priory, Faversham, Kent, home to the very welcoming Carmelite Community, with large screen link-up with World Youth Day in Rio de Janeiro, live bands, catechesis, guest speakers and more; this carnival atmosphere will be the next best thing to being in Rio this summer! It is a great opportunity for young people in our parish to experience youth ministry at such an amazing event. It is offered to young people form 17-30 years. Dates are form Friday 26 July to Tuesday 30 July at a cost of €600 approximately. This includes transport to and from the airport, transport while in the UK, flights, registration, accommodation (indoor camping), meals throughout the Bright Lights weekend, also one night stay in a 4* Hotel, theatre tickets and travel insurance. “Reminiscence Workshop”: On Friday next 17 May final day of “Reminiscence Workshop: a Look Back at the Good Times” with Mary Henry is taking place in Lus na Greine as part of Bealtaine. A lovely morning to remember times past - like walking to school, the smell of tobacco, shoe polish and the excitement of electricity to every home. You can tell your story and memories of times past. And then enjoy some lovely refreshments after like home made brown bread and potato bread. Make it a date. From 11.00 - 12.30pm

Table Quiz: Takes place tomorrow Thursday 16 May in the Duke Bar & Lounge, Dublin at 8.30pm. A bus will travel if there are sufficient numbers of people interested in travelling by bus; please let the Club know your intentions. People living and working in Dublin from Abbeylara are required to help organise the Table quiz. Please contact our Club if you know of anyone willing to help. All proceeds for Abbeylara GAA Club. Please support this event which promises to be a good evening of entertainment.

Tidy Towns: We would like to see all residents in the Abbeylara area out tidying and cleaning their own area, mowing lawns, hanging baskets etc.  Judging of the Tidy Towns/Villages begins at the end of May and will continue until the end of August. There is lots of activity going on at the moment so hopefully we will increase our marks this year.  There are some properties holding us back and if these were attended to, our marks would jump even higher. Remember come September you will be proud when you see the marks and say to yourself I helped with this project. We need more locals out at this time because we are down three men on last year from RSS and TUS and so much work to do.

First Holy Communion: Congratulations to the 7 girls and 7 boys of 2nd Class in Aughnagarron N.S. who received their First Holy Communion on Saturday 11 May in Carra Church. Prayerful good wishes also to the girls and boys of 2nd Class in Abbeylara N.S who will receive their First Holy Communion on Saturday 18th May in Abbeylara Church at 12 noon. All people are welcome to attend this Holy Mass.

Longford County Choir: Longford County Choir with orchestra will perform in concert ‘The Armed Man’ by Karl Jenkins, along with some other choral pieces in St. Mel’s Cathedral Centre, Longford on Sunday 26 May at 7pm. Tickets are €10 and are available at 087 6854876.

Free Library Membership: Bealtaine Festival is here for the month of May for Age & Opportunity. Free Library Membership to all senior citizens throughout May. Also check out the Programme of Events taking place in Rath Mhuire Resource Centre and Lus na Greine. For more information please contact or 0436686164.

Cycle & Climb to Croagh Patrick: The 3rd Annual Cycle and Climb to Croagh Patrick for the Parish of Granard Lourdes Invalid Fund, will take place on Saturday 1st June 2013. 2012 was a very successful and enjoyable climb. We hope this year will be equally successful, and there is plenty of time for any aspiring cyclist to fit in the training. Any enquiries contact Jimmy Brady 087 8875227.

Carra - Cemetery Sunday: Takes place on Sunday 2nd June. Please clean and tidy this Cemetery before then.

Exam Mass: Student Exam Mass will take place on Monday June 3rd in St. Bernard’s Church Abbeylara. If there are any students wishing to take part in the Mass i.e. Reading, Choir, Prayers or Offertory. Please contact; 087 6368460. All welcome.

Tax Rebate: Letters and ChY2 Certs for this scheme have been sent out. Those only who is wholly PAYE contributors are eligible and are kindly requested to fill in their CHY2 Certs and return in the envelope provided either at Mass or by post please. Parish Pastoral Council: The term of office for the present Pastoral Council has ended. The following people were members of the Pastoral Council: Mel Brady, Patsy Fox, Maureen Kelly, Brian Lynch RIP, Bridget Lynch, Patricia Mahon, Peter McIntyre, Maura Newman, Marett Smith, Mary Smith, Peter O’Reilly, Michael Reilly and Fr. Michael Campbell. Sincere thanks to the above people for their eight years of very generous service to our parish through the Pastoral Council. Nomination papers to start the process of electing a new Pastoral Council will be sent out to each home during the coming week. Details of what you have to do to be part of this election process will be given in the nomination papers that you will receive.
