Anyone interested in joining the cast of Oklahoma! should contact St. Mel’s Musical Society Chairperson June Belton, 087-7998621 for rehearsal details. Oklahoma! is the Rodgers and Hammerstein traditional classic featuring many famous songs such as Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin’, The Surrey with the Fringe on Top, I Can’t Say No, The Farmer and the Cowman, Poor Jud is Dead and the showstopper theme number Oklahoma!
The classic musical is the story of Laurey and the two rivals for her affections: Curly, a cowboy, and Jud, the hired farmhand. The play takes place in 1906 in an Indian territory of the American West during the time when Oklahoma was established as a state. It tackles class issues between the farmers and the cowmen in the still-developing, rugged landscape of a state in its infancy as characters struggle to find hope, love and the fulfillment of “the American Dream”.
Ballymacormack ICA Guild
The Christmas meeting was held in Stonepark National School and members as well as a number of guests joined in proceedings. Each member received a gift for the occasion and everyone enjoyed the night. Sympathies were passed to the Kane and McCoppin families on the sudden death of one of our longest members – Mary Lizzie McCoppin – who was a member of the guild since the 1940s and 50s. When the new guild was formed in 1980, Mary Lizzie joined again and took a very active part in most competitions. We will all miss her – she was the life and soul of all of us and so witty at all times. Also votes of sympathy was passed to Esther Casey on the death of Anthony’s sister, Majorie Hegarty who died recently. A date was set for the annual dinner – it will be held on January 12 next in MacPartlands (The Richmond Inn) in Clondra. Members and friends are asked to contact our guild treasurer Kitty McKeever at (043) 3341375. Music will be provided for on the night....so hope to see you all there!
