Tullynally challenge 5k

The long months of training are over. The hard miles on the road are done. The Tullynally Challenge 5k has finally arrived, and takes place this coming Wednesday, August 13th, starting at 8pm. It is hoped that this year the entry will even bigger than before, as last year attracted more than 460 athletes and one hundred under 16’s. The course this year follows the now traditional starting point on Pakenhamhall Road, out to Tullyally Castle and anti-clockwise around the diamond through the grounds of the castle, before returning to the finishing point on Pakenhamhall Road close to Castlepollard Fire Station. All finishers in the main 5k event this year will receive goody bags. Previous winners of note include Martin Fagan, Gerry Ryan, Gary Hynes, Andrew Ledwith and Jake Byrne. Registration takes place in Hotel Castlepollard, and is also available online from Chip timing will be available for accurate race timing. All race profits go towards North Westmeath Athletics Club and local Community Games. Showers and refreshments will be available after the main event, and prize giving and spot prizes in Hotel Castlepollard afterwards. Prizes are available for the first 6 Seniors, 6 Master categories, U-20s (Juniors), Walkers, three Team Prizes, and local category prizes. Entry fees are :- Seniors 13.00 euro, U-20s and Walkers 10.00 euro, and U-16’s 5.00 euro. Prior to the main event at 8pm, there will be a series of Short Races around the Square, starting at 7pm, catering for U-7, U-9, U-11, and U-13. Entry fee for these very popular races is 2 euro. The main 5K event is not just for the elite athlete, but for the enthusiastic amateur and the recreational runner, plus those who just want to walk the distance and soak up the atmosphere with friends and family. Traffic disruption is to be expected from 7pm onwards around the Square, and motorists are asked to cooperate with race marshals during that time, and during the main event where there will be restrictions on the Pakenhamhall/Longford road. Backelor festival

Following a hiatus of some years, the Bachelor Festival is returning to Castlepollard in a revised and refreshed form. The new Bachelor Festival will take place in Castlepollard as part of the forthcoming Lir Festival on Saturday, August 23rd, and Sunday, August 24th. There will be a cash prize of 300 euro for the winner, in addition to a night in Carton House and round of golf at the adjoining course. There will be set dancing, music and storytelling on the Square on the Sunday, in addition to a market, along with events for children. Entry requirements for the Bachelor Festival are that the contestants must be a) Bachelors, and b) between the ages of 20 and 50. They can be from anywhere in Ireland, and will be interviewed individually by the judges on the Saturday before a short interview on stage in Hotel Castlepollard. The event is one of the many initiatives organised by the North Westmeath Community Network, and will attract representatives from local businesses, sports and GAA clubs etc.

Fun cycle

Next Sunday, August 17th, Ringtown Hurling Club are holding a Family Fun Cycle, starting from Ringtown Centre, Whitehall, Castlepollard, heading out to Coole, on to Multyfarnham, and returning via the same route. The event starts at 12 noon, and will be followed by a Barbeque in Ringtown Centre later in the afternoon. The cycle is non-competitive and entry fees are adults 10 euro, and family groups 20.00 euro.

Credit Union draw

Castlepollard Credit Union held their Summer draw on Saturday, August 2nd, at their Offices, The Square, Castlepollard. The following each won 200.00 euro - Sean Hennessy, Castletown; Monica Meehan, Collinstown; Jimmy Melia, Kinturk; Elaine Brady, Coole; Simon Lowndes, Lir Park.

Jack & Jill fundraiser

Local man, Mick Fagan is running the Dublin City Marathon on the October Bank Holiday Monday in aid of the Jack & Jill Foundation. as part of his fundraising effort, The Anchor Bar, The Square, Castlepollard, are holding fundraising night on Friday night, August 29th, starting at 9pm. Music on the night will be Breege and the Star Tracks, and there will be food and a raffle on the night. Make a note in your diary and come along to support a very worthy cause.

Ray Flynn mile

County Longford Tourism Committee is hosting the inaugural Ray Flynn Mile in Longford Town on Saturday, August 23rd, in honour of the Longford native who holds the Irish record for the 1500 metres and the Mile, as well as a World Record as part of an all Irish 4 x I Mile Relay Team. This race will run on the Ballinalee Road, beginning at the roundabout and finishing at St. Mel’s Cathedral car park. The meeting point will be the Enterprise Centre on the Ballinalee Road. The event will help form part of a running festival weekend in Longford, that includes the 13th Annual Longford Marathon, scheduled for Sunday, August 24th. The Ray Flynn event will include and elite race, an Over 40’s race, and Juvenile races. People who just want to support the Tourism Committee are most welcome and are invited to walk the mile with friends or family. Registration is 10.00 euro for adults and 4 euro for juveniles, and advance registration is available through Eventbrite, Runners who are registered to run in the Marathon on the following day can run the Mile Event at a a subsidised fee of 5 euro.

Royal Canal Heritage Week

As part of National Heritage Week, Longford Tourism are hosting a Heritage Walk along the route of the Royal Canal from Richmlond Harbour in Clondra. Lee by Fr. Tom Murray this interesting and informative walk will take in some of the beautiful scenery of the newly opened Royal Canal Cycleway. Refreshments will be served afterwards in the Richmond Inn, Clondra. The walk takes place on Tuesday evening, August 26th, starting at 7.30pm. All are welcome.
