U 21 Championship: St Josephs played Castlerahan on Sunday last on the 3G Pitch, Kingspan Breffni Park in the U 21 Championship Semi-Final which they won by 8 points – St Josephs 1-13 Castlerahan 1-5. Ona bitterly cold afternoon Kian Monaghan got St Josephs off the mark with a point in the 1st minute which Castlerahan cancelled out a minute later. Conal Sheridan and Kevin Bouchier added points in the 5th and 8th minutes. Play moved up and down the pitch without a score but in the 19th minute Joe Masterson made great work in the St Josephs goal to deflect a shot out for a “45”. The resultant shot sailed all the way into the roof of the net to put Castlerahan into the lead. Kevin Bouchier pointed a free to bring the sides level in the 22nd minute. Castlerahan missed a great chance a few minutes later as one of their players juscxt couldn’t a grip on the ball with a goal on the cards. There were 8 extra minutes played in the first half and during these minutes Castlerahan scored 3 points with Ryan Connolly scoring 2 frees in reply for St Joseph’s to leave the half time score Castlerahan 1-4 St Joseph’s 0-6. Connolly was on target again just after the restart to level the scores again and while Castlerahan took the lead in the 7th minute it proved to be their only score of the half. Masterson brought off a great double save in the St Joseph’s goals and they moved the ball down the field for Connolly to split the posts and level matters in the 8th minute. Bouchier pointed in the 14th minute and after a great move involving Sean Smith, Donal O’ Reilly and Conal Sheridan the latter sent a screamer into the corner of the Castlerahan net in the 18th minute. Points followed from Sheridan (21 mins) Connolly (2 frees) 23rd and 28th minutes and Donal O’ Reilly in the 31st minute to send St Joseph’s into the Final against Ramor United at 3.30 pm on this Sunday in the 3G, Kingspan Breffni Park. On this Friday night last, a Presentation was made to former County Councillor, Mrs Maura Maguire Lynch in the Breffni Arms Hotel, Arva to mark her retirement from Cavan County Council. Maura had served 15 years on the Council during which time she worked hard for anyone who made contact with her. Maura decided to retire before the last election and her friends from the old Belturbet District Executive decided to honour her and the former Town Councillors from Belturbet – Peggy Gray, John Mc Donald, Barry Wilson and John Scott. Over 300 people attended with Deputy Heather Humphries T.D. Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht making the presentations. There were a number of present day and former Councillors in attendance with Deputy Joe O’ Reilly also present and delivering a very suitable address. Minister Humphries spoke eloquently about Maura and the work she done for the area, her kindness and straight talking. Maura replied and Barry Wilson spoke on behalf of the Belturbet Councillors. A very enjoyable night was had by all present. On behalf of the community we wish Maura good health and happiness in her retirement.
