St Patrick’s GAA Club

Lotto: The Arva Football Club Lotto draw was held in the Club Rooms on Monday 28th April. Jackpot €5,950-00 – Numbers drawn 10 /11 / 19 / 22 – No winner. €50 each – Ann Hughes, Cortober. Lillian Brady, Gurteen. Kate McCahill, Butlersbridge. The Jackpot on Monday night last 12th May was €6,000-00. Lotto Envelopes can be left in the Letterbox in St Patrick’s Hall next to the National School for collection on Monday evenings and everyone is welcome to attend the draw. The club have an option of paying by direct debit for anyone wishing to join the LOTTO and give the club much needed support. Contact any club officer or check out the club website Cavan A.C.F.L. Arva travelled to P.J. Duke Park, Stradone on Sunday last to play the home side in the Brady’s Arva Division 2 League. Underfoot conditions were very poor but both sides adapted and played with great determination. Arva led for most of the game but a Laragh Utd goal in the 51st minute left the home side trailing by one point which they scored in the 24th minute to level the scores at 1-8 each. In the final 10 minutes (4 mins injury time) Arva scored twice to a single score for Laragh to emerge winners by 1-10 to 1-9. Jonathan Mc Cabe opened the scoring with a point for Arva after 2 minutes but this was cancelled a minute later and the home side went in front after 8 minutes ( both free’s). Cormac McCabe levelled for Arva (12 mins) but again the hosts went ahead 2 minutes later. Points from Peter Morris (20 mins), Ryan Magarahan (23 mins) and a goal from Jonathan Mc Cabe (27 mins) left Arva ahead by 1-4 to 0-3 at the break. Laragh had the first score of the 2nd half after 40 seconds from a free but Jonathan Mc Cabe, Alan Barry and James Morris added 3 for Arva to leave them ahead by 6 points after 36 minutes. Laragh pointed in the 37th (free) & 38th minutes but Enda Gormley pulled one back for Arva (40mins). With the underfoot conditions getting worse scores were scarce but the home side had a god spell with a goal and 2 points (1 free) by the 54th minute to level the scores. Jonathan Mc Cabe put Arva in front after 56 minutes but Laragh levelled again from a free in the 62nd minute but Arva had the last score when Kevin Bouchier pointed a free after almost 64 minutes to take two precious league points. Subs: Paul Bouchier, Shane Mc Entee, Paul Brady.

The sides were to play a game in the Cully’s Craft Bakery Reserve League but this was postponed due to the condition of the pitch

Lourdes Petitions

Anyone wishing to send a Petition to Lourdes should write it out and place it in a sealed envelope and leave it into Arva Post Office. Money should not be put in the envelope, but if anyone wants to send money to have candles burn at the Grotto, it should be put in a separate envelope. The Kilmore Diocesan Pilgrimage to Lourdes will take place from 27th May to 1st June led by Bishop Leo O’Reilly.

First Communion

The following children from St. May’s National School, Arva will receive the Sacrament of First Holy Communion on this Saturday, 17th May in the Church of the Sacred Heart, Arva at 11 o’clock Mass - Alanna Boughtwood, Dara Brady, Peter Corr, Ellie Crotty, Aoibh Farrell, Liam Gray, Saskia Lee, Michaela McKeon, Abigail O’Hanlon, Aofie O’Hara, Áine O’Reilly, Eloise Shanaghy, Michael Whelan, Éanna Ward, Amanda Saulite, Kitija Saulite, Seán Lee. We congratulate them and hope they have a nice day.


Monster Bingo continues in St Patrick’s Hall, Arva each Sunday night with a good attendance. With over €3,150-00 on offer each night (€1,000 on page 9) it is one of the best sessions around. Eyes down at 9pm.

Church Services

Slimming World

Line Dancing

The Breffni Kickers Line Dancing Classes will come to a conclusion this Friday night with their annual Country Hoedown in the Breffni Arms Hotel, Arva at 9.30 pm. This is always a great night with members from other groups in attendance as they take a break for the summer months.

Show meeting

Arva Agricultural Show Society will hold an important meeting on this Thursday night, 15th May in the Resource Centre, Market Square, Arva at 9 o’clock. All members are requested to attend.


The Fianna Fail annual church gate collection will be held this weekend 17th and 18th May and in Arva will be taken up after Saturday evening and Sunday morning mass. Your generous support will be appreciated.

Social Club

Monster Raffle: The Social Club will hold a monster raffle on Friday 6th June under the supervision of Sgt Willie Ward. First Prize will be 2 nights B&B / Evening Meal for 2 people in Westport, Co Mayo. Second Prize €100 Voucher for Viewmount House, Longford and many more wonderful prizes. Tickets are on sale in most business houses in the town and you are asked to be generous in your support for this worthy cause. Arva Social Club – Fun and Games in St Patrick’s Hall, Arva each Tuesday from 10.00 am to 12 noon – do come along and please bring a friend. Arva Social Club are holding their last event on tonight Wednesday 14th May in the Breffni Arms Hotel and they have invited all the neighbouring clubs to attend. Activities get underway at 7.30 pm sharp and everyone is welcome to a night of music and craic. Please come along and bring a friend. There are still some seats available for the Tour to Wexford and anyone looking for more information should contact Breege Fox on 049 433 5577 or Ann Doyle on 049 4335 787. A bus will leave from St Patrick’s Hall at 9.30 am sharp on Monday 23rd June and will return on Friday 27th June. If interested please make contact with the above named as soon as possible. Arva Senior Citizens’ will have a Stall at the Country Markets to be held in the late Kathleen Brennan’s shop, Main Street, Arva on Friday 23rd May. Your support will be much appreciated.

Tea Day

The organisers of the Alzheimer’s Tea Day which was held in Arva on Friday, 25th April want to thank everyone who supported them on the day. The fantastic sum of €1063 was raised and given to the Alzheimers Society.


Arva Area Development Association would like to thank all who contributed and participated to make last Friday nights Tea Party a huge success. We thank Philomena and Eamonn Gray of the Breffni Arms Hotel who set-up the venue and provided nice food. Thanks to Mike Beasley and to Paddy Mulligan Forthill (Arva’s Rose of Tralee). Thanks to all the Table Hostesses and the Sponsors. The Weekly Atto was won by Arthur McCabe. He was presented with his cheque at the Tea Party on Friday night.
