Credit Union Day

Granard Credit Union will celebrate Credit Union Day this Thursday, October 17. Tea; Coffee; light refreshments and goodies on the day.

Collins 22 Society

Cllr Micheal Carrigy is organising a night of history on this Friday 18 October at 8pm in The Greville Arms Granard. The topic for the night is Michael Collins his life and his links with Longford and Granard in particular. There will be numerous speakers on the night including Gerry O’Connell Hon. Secretary of the Collins 22 Society. Michael Doran lecturer and author; Margot Gearty niece of Kitty Kiernan and Michael McDowell former Minister for Justice and grandson of Eoin McNeill, Chief of Staff of the Volunteers during the 1916 Rising. There will also be an exhibition of the Kiernan/Collins letters in conjunction with Longford County Library. Admission is €10 which covers refreshments etc. Proceeds from the night go towards maintaining Collins grave in Glasnevin Cemetery. Doors open at 7pm. Contact Micheal on 0872915072 with any queries.

St Mary’s GAA Club

On this Saturday, October 19 as part of our 125th celebrations we are holding a walk at Higginstown Complex. This walk is to raise funds for a very worthy cause - The Longford Hospice movement, so we would ask you to give it your full support. Walk takes place from 2pm to 5pm. you can walk as little or as much, as you desire. Later on Saturday night Back for the Game takes place in Fay’s Bar, it promises to be a great night with Des and Grainne conducting matters in their own inimitable way. All players past and present are invited to attend and we extend the same to all in the locality. Then on Sunday, October 20 at 3.30pm the main event takes place with Granard Healy’s v Arva Davitt’s play in a football match under 1888 rules and full regalia of that era. It is of great historical significance and it promises to be a wonderful occasion. The match will be preceded by an under 14 match at 2pm. and lots of other entertainment planned, so come along and enjoy a fun filled day.

Country Markets

Granard Country Markets continue in the Community Centre Barrack Street Granard every Friday morning from 8.30am to 11am. As winter now approaches the usual supplies of fire wood is back in stock along with the usual supply of Breads; Cakes; Jams; Free Range Eggs and Crafts.

Year of Faith 2012/13

A celebration of the Year of Faith 2012/13 and Community Volunteers for Granard Deanery takes place on Monday next October 21 in St Mary’s Church Granard at 7.30pm.

Pub of the Year Awards

For the first time since their inception the awards sponsored by the Longford Leader were presented on Wednesday night in Fay’s Bar Granard. A special award was presented in memory of the late Carmel Fay for all her work in the community during her lifetime. Carmel’s daughter Sinead accepted the suitably inscribed piece of crystal on behalf of Carmel’s family. Congratulations to all the winners of the various categories in the community pub of the year awards on the night.

Trip to Derry

Women in Touch are organizing a trip to Derry – City of Culture 2013 on Wednesday, October 23 taking in all the sights – The City Walls; The Guild Hall; The Peace Bridge; The Bogside and more. Anyone wishing to avail of a seat on the bus for this exclusive trip please leave your name in to Lus Na Greine FRC Main St. Granard with a deposit of €20. This trip is open to male and female. Granard ICA

Thanks to our guild president Doris Looker for organising the guided walk of Derrycasson Wood on Thursday last October 10. Over 40 people from various parts of the county and adjoining counties attended in glorious weather conditions with Luke Heffernan from Coillte giving a very informative talk on the trees; flowers; fauna and wild life in the forest. Thanks to everyone who made the effort to come along and enjoy this wonderful facility on our doorstep.

Longford ICA Federation

A trip to the Knit and Stitch Show in the RDS Dublin is being organised and a bus will travel on Saturday, November 2. Please register your interest by this Wednesday, October 16 with Helen who can be contacted on 085 7101053 or 043 3325261.


The Moatsiders Active Age group had a wonderful time on their trip to Ennis. Special thanks goes to Damien Reilly or driver who was an excellent tour guide and extremely helpful to the group. Our next meeting date in Rath Mhuire Resource Centre is this Thursday, October 17 at 2.30pm. Longford County Choir

We are delighted to announce that the County Choir will perform a recital in St. Mary’s Church, Granard in aid of the centre on Sunday 3 November. The choir will be supported by the Mulligan Sisters and artists from the local schools. Tickets €10 are available at the centre or from our volunteers. We are grateful to all involved in this project and ask for your support for a great event.

Set Dancing

Set Dancing with Bill continues at Lus Na Greine FRC Main Street Granard on Monday nights starting at 7.30pm each night for 2 hours. Everyone welcome.

Fashion Show

The Granard branch of SVP is holding a fashion show on Tuesday, October 22 in the Community Centre Granard at 8pm. The show will be preceded by a cheese and wine reception. Compere for the event is Ms Ann McGuinness with many special guests and celebrity models on night. Tickets are available from any of the volunteers / committee at €5 each or on the door on the night.


Bingo continues each Wednesday night in the Community Centre Granard at 8.45pm. This week’s jackpot is €12,600. Sincere thanks to everyone who supports this fundraising activity. Proceeds go to Abbeylara and St Mary’s GFC.

4 x 4 Challenge

David Feeley and his teams successfully completed the 4 x 4 Challenge in aid of Temple Street Children’s Hospital recently. Team Feeley raised almost €4,000 and would like to thank the local community for their generosity. 30 teams took part in all and a total of €35,000 was raised this year. Three teams from Granard took part David and Brian Feely; David Feely Jnr. and Tracey Mulvey; Keith O’Farrell and James Moran. This was a major feat for the local teams who were competing against teams from all over Ireland and England.


Johnny and Fiona Macken would like to thank everybody who supported them in the Breffni Challenge 2013. To all who sponsored us for the cycle in August; the many people who came to our fundraising night in the Boomerang Bar and to all who donated spot prizes and money on the night. We are delighted to be able to present a cheque for €6120 to the Breffni Challenge who in turn present this along with all the other funds raised to the Friends of St. Luke’s; Cavan Homecare and the Breast Cancer Research Centre.

Pat the Baker Award

Congratulations to local bakery Pat the Baker who was awarded Silver at the Blas na hEireann Irish Food Awards held recently at the Dingle Peninsula Food and Wine festival. This is the 7th year of the competitions that are held on the first week of October each year. The award was given to Pat the Baker for their traditional sliced white batch.

Viewmount House

Congratulations to Granard natives James and Beryl (Smith) Kearney the proprietors of Viewmount House Dublin Road Longford and their chef Gary O’Hanlon who were awarded the best restaurant in the Georgina Campbell Top Restaurant awards announced last week.

Fancy Dress

The annual fundraising event for the Christmas Lights in town will take place in the Bay Horse Bar on Saturday, October 26. Tickets are currently on sale at €5 each in the various business premises in town to help defray the costs in having the town illuminated for Christmas. There are valuable prizes 1st Prize €500; 2nd Prize €300 and 3rd Prize €200.


Adult Badminton takes place each Monday night commencing at 8pm in the Canon Kelly Community Sports Hall at Ardscoil Phadraig Granard. There are 4 playing courts and Rackets and Shuttles are provided. For further information contact William at 086-8226523.

Recent Death

Sympathy is extended to Sheila Donoghue and family Main St. Granard on the death of her brother Tom Walsh Drumderg Ballinalee who died unexpectedly on Wednesday last at Mullingar Regional Hospital. Tom’s funeral Mass was celebrated in Ballinalee on Friday followed by burial in St Emer’s cemetery. May he rest in peace.

Happy Heart Walking Club

A great turnout again on Saturday morning last. This week Saturday, October 19 we are meeting at the Car Park at Cnoc Mhuire Secondary school at 10.15am. Membership forms are available in Lus na Greine or from any member. All ages are welcome. See you Saturday!
