Warmest congratulations to Niall and Darren Flynn, Toneymore on winning the World Handball Doubles Title at the World Handball Championship on Saturday, 15 August in Calgari, Canada. Also warmest congratulations to Jonathon Mahon, Toneymore and Fintan Creamer, Robinstown who also did very well at the same World Handball Championship and also came very close to winning a title. These four young men deserve the highest of praise on their remarkable achievements. Very well done to each of you!

Abbeylara NS

The Parents Association are holding a Fundraiser. There are Hampers for raffle in Granard Credit Union and Macken’s Filling Station, Granard. Tickets cost €2 per strip or 3 for €5. Your support would be greatly appreciated.

First Fridays

Please have a table cloth, a Candle, a small Cross and Holy Water when Fr. Michael is visiting you on First Fridays with the Blessed Sacrament.

Gun Club

The annual County Clay Shoot was held in the shooting grounds in Derragh on Sunday, 16 August. A total of twenty three teams participated. The Club wishes to congratulate the following winners: Senior team winners Granard, Intermediate winners Moydow, Junior Team winners Mostrim, High Gun winner on the day was Martin Carberry, Kenagh; Under 21 winner was Daniel Beirne, Newtownforbes; Veteran winner was Martin Gilchrist, Mostrim; Training Licence Holder winner was Donal Harkins, Granard; The Peter Lyons Memorial Trophy for Down the Line was won by Dermott Mc Dermott, Templemicheal. The presentations took place afterwards in Crawford’s Lounge, the club wishes to thank Josie and staff for the use of their premises and also to Joe from Granard Inn for providing food. Weather held up on the day and a good sporting day of clay shooting was had by all.

Community Games

We had 2 runners competing in the second weekend of the All Ireland Community Games Finals in Athlone. 1st up was Rachel Gillian in the U-16 girls 100m in what was a very tight race Rachel just missed out on a spot in the semi. Later in the day was young Cian O’Donnell running in U8 boys 60m running a very good race he booked a place in the semi on Sunday morning. It was a wet morning in Athlone and Cian had another great race but was just piped at the post for a place in the final. This is Cians’ 1st Community Games Final and we are sure it will not be his last. We would like to say well done to all the boys and girls that took part over the last 2 weekends and indeed through the year. Thank you to everyone who gave so generously to our church gate collection over the last two weekends. 

Tractor Run

The annual tractor run in aid of Diabetes takes place on Sunday, 30 August departing from Higginstown Complex at 2pm. Barbeque (weather permitting) and raffle for valuable prizes in J.V’s afterwards. Your support will be very much appreciated.

Cancer Support

The Cancer Support Sanctuary LARCC is holding their annual collection at Masses on Saturday 29 and Sunday 30 August. Please support.

Irish Heart Foundation

The Irish Heart Foundation will hold their annual collection at Masses on Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 September. Please support.


Farewell Social and Presentation to Father P.J. Fitzpatrick on Friday, 28 August in the Pikers Lodge, Loch Gowna at 8pm.  Buffet served 8.30pm to 9.30pm.

Citizens Information

There will be no Citizens Information Outreach Service in Granard on Thursday mornings for the months of July and August. If you require any information or advice please call to our office in Longford which is situated at Level One at Longford Shopping Centre or alternatively call our National Call Centre on 076 1074000. This Service provides free, quality, confidential, up-to-date information and advice to all in relation to their civil and social rights, entitlements and the social services that exist to support them.

GAA Club

Takes place every Wednesday night at 8.45pm in the Community Centre Granard. Proceeds go towards St. Mary’s Granard and Abbeylara GAA Clubs. Jackpot now stands at €20,000 in 42 numbers; there is a second Jackpot of €2,200 in 46 numbers, come along early to avoid the rush. Seats are limited so come along early and enjoy the fun. IT COULD BE YOU!

Parish Draw

Active Retirement

We had a lovely day, started off by travelling in a luxury coach on its maiden voyage first day on the road.  The sunshine all day was the icing on the cake with a lovely visit to Guinness’s and then the GAA Museum and tour of Croke Park.  We had a lovely meal in the Hamlet Hotel, Enfield. On the way home people were asking when the next trip is!? So watch this space!

5K Race

Streete Parish Park annual 5K Race/Walk takes place on September 4 at 7.00pm. Registration will take place from 6.00pm at the Park. Proceeds from the event will go towards the upkeep and repairs to the playground facility. Even if you can’t run or walk please come along and support and have a cuppa. The playground is a most popular facility as all mothers and fathers know. Please support!

Autumn Courses

Longford Women’s Link is now taking bookings for Autumn Courses. These courses include Occupational First Aid, Occupational First Aid Refresher, Child Development, Special Needs Assisting, Manual Handling and Patient Moving, NUI Maynooth Certificate in Addiction Studies and a Special Purpose Award in Transformative Community Education. Colmcille Ploughing Association is holding their annual ploughing and field day on Sunday, 30 August on the lands of the Bleakley Family, Smear. In conjunction with the normal ploughing and side shows there will be an open day in Bleakley’s Mill, where people can witness for themselves how the mill worked and gain a piece of history from days gone by. It promises to be a great family fun day for everyone so make sure and come along!

New School Year

Ardscoil Phàdraig is re-opening on Friday 28 August for all First Years.  Fifth years are due back on Monday 31 August. All remaining students are back on Tuesday 1 September. QQI Level 5 courses in Nursing Studies and Animal Care are also due to begin next week. Contact the school on 043 6686209 for times and dates. These QQI Level 5 courses are suitable for both school leavers and mature students who wish to return to education and gain new skills or employment. They also provide links to certain courses in Universities and Institutes of Technology and can be worth up to 400 points.
