St. Mary’s Parish
It is with great joy St. Mary’s Parish welcomes Archbishop Charles Brown Papal Nuncio to Ireland to lead us in solemn evening prayer on Sunday 1st February at 5.30pm. As part of the solemn evening prayer the Papal Nuncio will present Sr. Maeve with the Benemerenti Medal. The word Benemerenti derived from the Latin meaning “to a well deserved person” and it hangs on a yellow and white ribbon in Papal colours. The community are invited to be part of this solemn occasion with the Papal Nuncio, Bishop Francis Duffy and Bishop Colm O’Reilly.
The monthly meeting of Granard I.C.A. takes place on Thursday 5 February at 8.00pm in the Credit Union Meeting Room entrance at rear of building. A guest speaker will attend on the night. Hostesses for meeting are Nancy and Maura. Monthly prize Aggie Dermody. Prospective new members are welcome to attend two meetings before deciding to pay a membership fee.
The ICA Federation quarterly meeting will take place in the Rustic Inn, Abbeyshrule on 24 February hosted by Legan Guild.
Strictly Come Dancing

Co. Longford Historical Society will deliver a lecture on Bishop John Kilduff (1820-1867) on Wednesday 4 February in St. Mel’s College at 8.00pm. Gearoid O’Brien Athlone Librarian and author will talk on the life of this distinguished churchman who was closely linked with the building of both. Mel’s Cathedral and St. Mel’s College. A very topical subject with the re-opening of the Cathedral at Christmas and the 150th anniversary of the college.
Sympathy is extended to Paddy Durkin, Main Street, Granard and the extended Durkin family on the death of Paddy’s mother, Eileen Durkin (nee Reid), Saggart, Dublin which occurred at Peamount Hospital, Dublin on 17 January. Funeral Mass was celebrated in Terenure, Dublin on Wednesday. Prayer Service was held in St. Mary’s Church at 1.00pm followed by burial in Granardkille old cemetery. May she rest in peace.
The death of Anna McGerr, (nee Masterson), Kilfintan, Granard occurred peacefully at Laurel Lodge Nursing Home, Longford on Saturday, 24 January. Predeceased by her husband Owen and son Declan. She will be dearly missed by her family Mary, Eugene, Patrick, Edel and Paula, brother Tommy Masterson, grandchildren, son-in-law, daughters-in-law and extended family circle. May she rest in peace. Funeral Mass was celebrated in Boherquill on Monday at 12 noon followed by burial in adjoining cemetery.
A special commemorate Mass took place in St. Colmcille’s Church Augnacliffe on Saturday last to mark the 40th Anniversary of the late Fr. Philip J. McGee. Bishop Emeritus Colm O’Reilly was the celebrant. Fr. McGee was involved in the management of the Longford GAA Senior team in the 1960’s which culminated in the team’s historic win of the National League in 1966. Many of the surviving members of the Longford and Galway teams attended the Mass together with former fellow teachers from Moyne Community School who organised the event. Fellowship followed in the Community Centre Aughnacliffe.

Done and Dusted
Abbeylara GAA are holding their annual drama presentation in Crover House Hotel, Mountnugent on Friday and Saturday 13 and 14 February. This year’s presentation is entitled Done and Dusted and promises to be another very entertaining event again this year Tickets are available from club members at €15 each this includes supper. On Saturday night following the drama there will be Cabaret and Dancing with Andreas Durkin.
St. Christopher’s Services
The Granard Branch of St. Christopher’s services are having a fundraising night in the Community Centre, Granard on Friday, 20 February commencing at 8.30pm. Padraig Potts’ Guide to Walking a play written and performed by Seamus O’Rourke and directed by Charlie McGuinness. All Seamus O’Rourke’s plays are very entertaining.
St. Vincent de Paul
Official opening of new shop will take place on Saturday, 31 January. Lots of bargains available! The committee would like to thank everyone for your generosity and support and assure you that all donations received will go to people in need in the Granard/ Abbeylara/Mullinalaghta and Ballinalee areas.
Ballinagh Garden Club
Will hold their monthly meeting on Monday next, 2 February at 8pm in the Community Centre with Catherine Gibson Brabazon and her topics are Spring planting and vegetable growing. Refreshments will be served and all welcome.
The annual Clonfin commemoration ceremony will take place on this Sunday 1 February starting with Mass for deceased members in St. Mary’s Church in Granard at 11.30am followed by the ceremony at the site in Clonfin at 3.00pm and refreshments in McElvaney’s, Coolarty afterwards. The organizing committee are looking forward to a large crowd attending and all are welcome.

Christmas Lights Committee
Granard Christmas Lights committee would to thank the people of Granard and surrounding areas for their help and contribution in bringing Granard to it’s festive glory this Christmas. To everybody who sold and bought tickets for the draw, organisers and supporters off the tractor run, the people that came along to the fancy dress all those who came out in numbers for the traditional street market, people who gave individual donations, we are deeply appreciative. To all the people that were in any way associated with lending a shoulder and helping with the Christmas Lights/Christmas Tree’s and Crib this year Thank You. Going forward to 2015 we look forward to your support once again & would welcome new faces on board with great aspirations to once again recreating and improving on this magical experience in Granard - the town we are all so proud to live in.
Granard Country Markets returned on Friday morning last with their usual supplies of home baking; crafts; firewood etc. situated beside the Post Office Main Street Granard. The market takes place each Friday morning from 8-30am to 11-00am.
