Congratulations to Mr Paul Kelly, Newtowncashel and formerly of Knockavagen who celebrated his fiftieth birthday with a surprise party in Leavey’s pub, Foigha last Saturday night. Paul was completely taken by surprise when his family put on a well planned party which swept him off his feet. The party was attended by both families and a large circle of friends admirers and relations.

We wish the best of luck to Fr Peter Tiernan who will be moving from Carrickedmond parish this week to take a new position in Cloone and Aughavas. Father Peter had endeared himself to all his parishioners and indeed beyond its borders. He had a word for everyone and will be sadly missed by so many throughout south Longford.


The death has occurred in England of Tom Derwin, formerly of Derryadd, Kenagh over the past week and will be interred in England. Tom was one of a large family reared in Derryadd before he emigrated to England many years ago. Tommy was predeceased by his wife, brother Mick, sisters Teresa. To his family, brothers Fintan, Donal and Padraig, sisters Nuala, Rose, Lil and May, we offer sincere sympathy. We also offer our sympathy to Cathy Gerety, Derralough on the death of her mother, Mrs R Keenan, Kiltoom, Co Roscommon and to the York family, Toome Ballymahon on the death of their father Mick York.

World suicide prevention day

An ecumenical service of remembrance and hope will be held in Christ the King Cathedral, Mullingar on Wednesday, 10th September at 7.30pm with the aim of creating awareness of suicide prevention, supporting those bereaved by suicide and giving a message of hope for the future. All are welcome to attend and to stay for refreshments afterwards.
