Death of Gerry Murtagh
The sad death occurred at Limerick General Hospital on Friday, 11th April 2014 of Gerry Murtagh, native of Cloncullen, Ballymore, Co Westmeath, son of Anne and the late Patrick. Aged only 59 years old, Gerry has been living and working in London for the last 33 years and had travelled over to Limerick to attend a Funeral, where he fell ill just a few short weeks ago. He was a hard-working, generous and good humoured man, whose family always came first. Gerry regularly came home to Cloncullen over the years to visit his mother, family and many friends in the area. He loved socialising with them all when he came over, he always enjoyed the banter, he was a great character, a very personable man. He was an accomplished footballer in his day, he won an Intermediate championship medal with Ballymore in 1972 and also wore the maroon jersey with Westmeath where he played for some time. He was an avid G.A.A. follower in England also, watching all the Irish matches on television, especially when Westmeath were playing. Gerry’s remains lay in repose at Rooney’s Funeral Home in Ballymore before his removal to the Church of the Most Holy Redeemer where a Guard of Honour was formed by the Ballymore G.A.A. Club and many of the former players who played with him. A huge number of people called to the Murtagh home on hearing of Gerry’s sad and untimely death, also to the Funeral Home and to the Funeral Mass in Ballymore, many travelling over from England which bore testimont to the respect which is held for Gerry and all his heartbroken family. The beautiful singing at the Church was performed by Gerry’s niece, Mairead Murtagh and also Deborah Cox and Emer Hannon. His remains were laid to rest at the adjoining cemetery. We offer our sincere sympathy to Gerry’s mother Anne, son Liam, daughters Michelle and Yvonne, Mary, grand-daughter Paige, sister Mary (Kiernan), Moyne, brothers Brendan (Ballymahon), Declan (Forgney), Johnny (Tashinney), Enda (Cloncullen), Padraig (Moate) and Dermot (Dungarven), his aunt Phil Fearon (Ballymahon), nephews, nieces, aunts, brother-in-law, sisters-in-law, relatives and many friends. May God grant rest to his Soul.
