There was much regret in the area on the death of Michael Lynch, Cloncovid, which occurred at Mullingar hospital recently after a brief illness. Deceased who was aged 87 had been ill for only a few days and his passing is widely mourned by his family, neighbours and friends by whom he will be sadly missed. Michael was one of a dying breed - a noted tradesman who could turn his hand to any job inside or outside the house. In the days before fitted kitchens and readymade units Michael was much in demand and his work was always tastefully finished. He will be remembered for making the crib in Mullahoran church and various other jobs around the Parochial house and indeed in many houses in the parish and neighbouring areas. He was also a talented musician and could play the saxophone or drums with equal skill. In the days of the local hall dances he performed with the old Bruskey band and later with the Brady Brothers as they did the rounds, and he was also a keen ballroom dancer. Michael had a friendly and affable manner and enjoyed a chat and a few drinks in the local pubs when the day’s work was done. He was pre-deceased by his wife Peggy and is survived by his son Paul and daughter Patricia, grandchildren, relatives and friends to whom we extend our sincere sympathy. Funeral took place from Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Mullahoran on Wednesday 5th February and burial took place to local cemetery. May he rest in peace.

We extend congratulations to Paudie & Margaret of Lynch’s, Killydoon on the extension of their business to include Gala Brand. This long-established grocery and hardware shop has been a landmark down through the years and continues to serve the local community well when many small country shops have long since closed. In fact the parish is well served by local shops as the creamery store across the road run by Barry & Anthony Sheridan is also another thriving and valuable asset to the local farming community as is Joe Reilly’s extensive business in Kilcogy. In all these well stocked shops a friendly welcome awaits locals and visitors alike and long may they last.
