Excitement was at fever pitch in Longford town on Saturday as the man in the red suit paid a visit to turn on the Christmas lights.

Facilitated by Longford County Council Santa Claus delighted all in attendance in a ceremony that featured music and fun for all the family.

After a chat with the local children the big man flicked on the switch at the Longford Courthouse.

Longford Chamber of Commerce President Fiona Fenelon said the event was very well organised: “It went very well. There was huge turn out, and it was wonderful to see so many people come out to enjoy the evening.”

The Chamber President said Saturday's event was a great way to kick off the holiday season and get people in the mood in the run up to: “There were lots of families in attendance and there was a a real festive atmosphere.”

Holding the switching on ceremony at the courthouse was a departure from tradition: “It worked very well. Normally it's at the centre of town, but with the roadworks taking place it was moved to the Courthouse. Everyone seemed very happy with it.”

The Chamber are hoping that people will continue to flock to the town over the festive season. The local authority have arranged free off street parking in the run up to Christmas.

On Saturday December 3, Saturday December 10 and everyday from Saturday December 17 to Saturday December 31 all off street car parks will be free of charge.
