Members from Granard's Lus na Gréine Youth Club in Derrycassin Woods last Sunday
A group of youngsters from north Longford have thrown their weight behind the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Ukraine by raising over €3,000 towards its cause.
Members of Granard Youth Club at Lus na Gréine Family Resource Centre in Granard held a 5km walk in Derrycassin Woods last Sunday as part of that drive. Speaking on behalf of the group Charlotte Sullivan said: “We just could not stand idly by and do nothing”.
“We know the people there are suffering so much from this needless and shocking war visited on them, so we thought we would raise some money and give it to the Irish Red Cross to help.
Members of the group thanked Lus na Gréine’s Pre-Loved Boutique who donated all their weekend’s takings to support the initiative and to other businesspeople, families and young people in the North Longford area who supported the walk. Jack Fagan said people of all ages took part, adding: “We are very pleased that our efforts will lift the burden on those who are seeking shelter and protection.”
Donations are still being accepted this week before club members make a presentation to the Irish Red Cross after St Patrick’s Day.
