New weather alerts are now in place across much of the country including a low temperature and ice warning that has been rolled out in Longford and all of Leinster, Cavan, Monaghan, Munster, Galway and Roscommon.
Met Éireann has warned that temperatures are expected to plummet to between -1 and -3 degrees nationwide, bringing “sharp frost and icy stretches” and “black ice”.
The national forecaster has also warned of 'treacherous' travel conditions due to freezing temperatures, frost, wintry showers and black ice.
Several weather warnings warnings in place since Sunday expired at 11am this morning.
However, they have been replaced by fresh Status Yellow warnings that will continue up until 9am on Tuesday.
Met Éireann has warned of freezing temperatures tonight with the mercury set to fall as low as -2C overnight in Longford town, Ballymahon, Granard and Drumlish and -1C in Edgeworthstown, Lanesboro and Legan.
The national forecaster warned that “widespread frost and icy stretches will form early on along with patches of mist and fog”.
Across the country, the mercury will fall as low as -3 degrees.
A second weather alert has been issued for Donegal, Leitrim, Mayo and Sligo who are under a Status Yellow snow and ice warning.
Met Éireann said people in those areas could expect hazardous travel conditions and poor visibility with “wintry showers with sleet and some snow accumulations” and “sharp frost and ice”.
Met Éireann said today (Monday) began “very cold”, with frost and icy stretches on untreated surfaces slow to clear.
The national forecaster said although many areas will stay dry and sunny, there will be a plethora of wintry showers that will continue to affect the north and northwest, with temperatures struggling to rise above 1C to 6C.
