Safety signs need to be erected on 'dangerous and deteriorated' Longford roads

Councillor Martin Skelly said they are secondary roads and sometimes they are forgotten about but they warranted some attention

A councillor has called on Longford County Council to erect safety signs 'regarding dangerous undulations on two local roads.

Fine Gael Cllr Martin Skelly highlighted his concerns with the Ledwithstown, Ballymahon to Derrycolumb, Newtowncashel road and the Corlea to Kenagh Village road at the recent December meeting of Ballymahon Municipal District.

"These are obviously both bog roads from Corlea to Kenagh village and from Ledwithstown Ballymahon to Derrycolumb Newtowncashel but parts of the roads have deteriorated seriously over the last number of years.

"There are actually parts that if you are driving at any sort of speed and you hit this and you don't know the road well it's actually very dangerous so I'm asking that something would be done."

Cllr Skelly said they are secondary roads and sometimes they are forgotten about but they warranted some attention.

"There is still a lot of traffic on these roads and they need to be looked after."

The motion was seconded by Cllr Sean Mimnagh who supported it and he referred initially to the Ledwithstown Ballymahon to Derrycolumb Newtowncashel road and agreed action was needed.

"It's a very good motion and it is outrageous, if you didn't know the road at all you definitely could be causing an awful lot of harm and going off the road.

"The Corlea to Kenagh one, I'd be on that regularly and when we were given our road plan back in 2024 we did submit that to be done in 2026, so as far as I'm aware it's on the road plan."

Cllr Mick Cahill also said it he supported the motion.

Senior Executive Engineer Brian McNeela confirmed the roads were included in the 2026 roads programme.

"In the interim we will carry out patching works necessary to maintain the roads in a safe condition until a full upgrade is carried out and additionally we will stick up warning signage."
