Funeral details announced for Longford businessman, Shane Carrigy

The funeral details have been announced for Mr Shane Carrigy of Ballymakeegan, and formerly of Ballinalee, who sadly lost his life following a tragic accident at his business last Thursday.

Both communities were in shock as locals learned of the passing of Shane, a well-liked and highly respected businessman. 

Emergency services had battled to save Shane after he sustained serious injuries during a tragic incident which is said to have occurred as he tended to an oil leak underneath a bus. Sadly, despite the best efforts of the paramedics, Shane was pronounced dead a short time later.  

Funeral arrangements were confirmed last night. Shane will be reposing at the Holy Trinity Church in Ballinalee (N39PP60), today Saturday November 29 from 4pm concluding with prayers at 7pm. The funeral mass will take place on Sunday in the Holy Trinity Church at 2pm, followed by burial in St Emer's Cemetery, Ballinalee.​​​​​ House is private at all times. The notice reads, "Predeceased by his mother Catherina. ​​Shane will be sadly missed and forever loved by his family, his beloved wife and best friend Anne, his cherished children Kayla and Ryan. His father Michael, sister Michelle and brothers Raymond, Michael (Karena) and Aiden. Father in law Pat Joe, mother in law Maria, brother in law Michael, sisters in law Margaret (Dermot), Patricia (Gerard) and Marie, extended family, and a large circle of friends."

Within minutes of the funeral notice going live, there were hundreds of condolences. 

Earlier yesterday, a friend described the Ballinalee native to The Longford Leader as a great family man who adored his wife Anne, and their two young children.   

Shane - a cousin of Longford Fine Gael TD, Micheál Carrigy - ran a successful family business, Carrigy’s Coaches, which was first established by his father Michael 26 years ago. According to the company website, it was under his management that Carrigy Coaches grew to become “one of the leading professional coach and mini coach operators in the midlands.”

Since the sad news broke on Thursday, hundreds of comments have appeared underneath posts on social media, all sharing condolences and recalling what a lovely gentleman he was. 

Speaking to the Longford Leader, locals described Shane as a "genuine man," "a pure gentleman", and "a great community man" who was heavily involved in the local GAA scene through his club Sean Connolly.

From his time playing underage football right through to senior, Shane was known as a proud and dedicated club man. He was however, first and foremost, locals said, "a devoted family man." 

Within minutes of the funeral notice going live, there were hundreds of condolences posted. 

One friend left the touching tribute, "It's impossible to portray the absolute fantastic person Shane is. What a gentleman generous kind thoughtful and intelligent genius. A crazy gadget, a new tool, or venture, he never stopped investing or thinking into the future. May God help his wife and wonderful children of which he always spoke about all the time. He's is so so proud of them, and all his family members and countless friends. So long Shane."

Another wrote, "The world sure has lost one true gentleman. We will always treasure the years of football rounders and darts we went to and you with us for many years. I am sure you will never be forgotten. It's with a very heavy heart we write these words. May you always R.I.P Shane. Condolences to Shane's wife, kids, and all the Carrigy family. Prayers and thoughts with you all"
