The Maria Edgeworth Centre has recently acquired a 1736 legal document signed by Richard Edgeworth, in relation to the tolls on the road between Longford and Mullingar.

Chairperson, Matt Farrell, commented that the centre is yet to figure out the role the Edgeworths had in relation to the road yet. It was donated to the centre by the law society in Dublin.

The second acquisition is a 12-foot-long linen scroll of the Beaufort family tree. The Edgeworths and Beauforts were well-connected because Frances Beaufort was married to Richard. The acquisition of the scroll will now cement the connection between Meath and Edgeworthstown in Co Longford. It was acquired by an Irish, local, anonymous donor.

The third came very recently from America from the 1830s. George Keating, a rector, emigrated to America. His daughter, Thomasina, was friends with the Edgeworths. Authors used to have gift books printed and bound, and gave one to Thomasina with a note, wishing her well. She emigrated when she was 8. The family discovered the book in America recently and returned it to the museum. It is a rare item.

In relation to the centre itself, Matt said: “The museum is growing with an international reputation as an information hub on the Edgeworths. A repository for Edgeworth and Longford memorabilia and artefacts look for a home here.”

The Maria Edgeworth Centre is open six days a week and booking details can be found online at www.mariaedgeworthcentre.com, or by calling 087 224 1351. It holds books, manuscripts, letters and artefacts as well.
