A much sought after dedicated HQ building for Longford Civil Defence has taken a major step forward with a €50,000 allocation towards the cost of purchasing a site under the Community Recognition funding.
Minister for Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht, Dara Calleary TD, has today announced almost €200k to deliver four key projects in Co Longford.
Welcoming the funding, Senator Joe Flaherty said: “This is the first and real tangible evidence of the commitment to deliver on a much needed Civil Defence HQ for Longford. The Dept are very much aware of the need for such a facility but the critical first step was the identification of a suitable site and we are now making progress in this regard.
The Longford Senator also welcomed funding for Luis na Greine in Granard and the sports pitch at Moyne CS as well as a signification €50,000 allocation for Longford Tidy Towns, which will enable work on a number of key landmark sites in the town.
This is part of a national €17 million investment announced by my colleagues Minister Colm Burke and Minister Jerry Buttimer, supporting 212 projects across the country to improve sports facilities, parks, recreational trails, arts, culture, and community infrastructure.

Deputy Micheál Carrigy said: “This is another great boost for Longford. Each of these projects plays an important role in building strong, inclusive, and welcoming communities. This funding recognises the incredible work being done on the ground and supports the local response to population growth and community integration. I want to commend all involved for their vision and commitment to strengthening local services.” The Community Recognition Fund was established to support areas that have welcomed people from other countries in recent years, helping to improve and expand local infrastructure. To date, it has delivered €100 million in funding across Ireland.
