Longford District Court
A man who was caught with a small quantity of drugs has been ordered to make a contribution to the court poor box in order to avoid a conviction.
Gary Keena of 14 St Michael's Court, Longford pleaded guilty at the local district court to the offence on June 3, 2024.
Sergeant Mark Mahon said Garda David Conroy was on patrol on Connaught Road, Longford when he stopped and searched the defendant.
A small quantity of cocaine with a value of €50 was found on the defendant.
Sgt Mahon said Mr Keena had a good attitude and there was no issue with him and he cooperated with Gardaí.
The defendant had 13 previous convictions, but no previous convictions for drugs offences.
Solicitor Diarmuid Quinn said his client had held his hands up and engaged positively with Gardaí.
"He signed the notebook confirming it was his own and he had a problem."

Mr Quinn suggested that perhaps Judge Owens could put the case back for review and he stated Mr Keena would be willing to come to court with €350 for the court poor box.
Judge Bernadette Owens adjourned the case until September 16 next.
She indicated if Mr Keena brings the money for the poor box and he is law-abiding in the intervening period she would give him a chance and strike out the matter.
