Learned a big lesson': Longford man drove sister's car while uninsured

The motorist pleaded guilty in Longford District court

A north Longford man, who was caught by Gardaí driving his sister's car while uninsured, has avoided a disqualification.


Michael Maguire (21) of Tromra Road, Granard pleaded guilty at Longford District Court to driving without insurance on October 4, 2024.


Sergeant Mark Mahon, court presenter, said Garda Enda Keane stopped the defendant at Barrack Street in Granard shortly before 10pm and he spoke to him.

The court heard Garda Keane established a short time later that Mr Maguire had no insurance on the vehicle.


Sgt Mahon said the defendant had been driving his sister's vehicle at the time he was detected.


The court heard Mr Maguire cooperated with Gardaí and he had no previous convictions.

Solicitor Frank Gearty said his client, who comes from a well-respected family, had made a mistake when he decided to drive.
"He has learned a big lesson.


“He was picking his girlfriend up and he regretfully took the decision to bring his sister's car.”


Mr Gearty said Mr Maguire is a decent, hard working man who is employed as a car valeter.


Judge Bernadette Owens convicted the defendant and imposed a €450 fine with six months to pay.
