An Independent councillor has called on Longford County Council to seek funding for the development of an off leash dog park in a green space in conjunction with the walkway in Granard.
Councillor Turlough McGovern, who tabled his motion at last week's meeting of Granard Municipal District, said he believed it would be a perfect facility at this suitable location.
"Dog owners always struggle with the issue and, to some place in Granard where they could be off the leash, plus it might elevate some of the ongoing problems of dog fouling on our streets.
"These parks are proven very successful in other towns such as Mullingar and Granard could be a pilot project for Longford," he added.

Cllr McGovern stated since they are working with the regeneration team and there is further development in relation to lighting due to be carried out on the Granard greenway it should be considered.
Director of Services Barbara Heslin said she had spoken to the regeneration team and enquired about possible funding options but unfortunately there is no money available for such a project.
She stated dog parks are usually in fenced and flat green areas with multiple activities for dogs to partake in and they would not ordinarily be in wooded facilities.

"It's in an enclosed capacity or area for the protection of the dogs but also the other individuals that might be out walking at the time," Ms Heslin added.
Ms Heslin said she took it upon herself to contact the Wolfshead Company of Archers based in Higginstown and they would be interested in looking at the possibility.
She stated she understood it would not be very expensive and she believes it would be a great addition to that complex.
Cllr McGovern thanked her for doing the research but said his preference would be for it to be based near the Granard greenway and he said he would be happy to discuss it further with her.
