Longford native Darragh Beirne, an Associate with engineering firm Arup, was recently honoured as a finalist for the 2024 Chartered Engineer of the Year Award.

The event took place last November at Engineers Ireland’s offices in Ballsbridge.

With over 15 years of experience in the railway industry, Darragh has built a distinguished career delivering large-scale infrastructure projects. He began his journey with TII (formerly RPA) in 2007, later moving to the UK in 2012 to work with Network Rail.

Darragh joined Arup in 2014, and returned to Ireland two years later. A highlight of Darragh’s career includes his innovative work on the value engineering and design development of the Tottenham Hale tunnel portal for Crossrail 2, the hybrid commuter rail and rapid transit route in South East England.

The Chartered Engineer title, regarded as the gold standard in the profession, has been awarded by Engineers Ireland for over 50 years. It recognises engineers who demonstrate exceptional competence, innovation, and professional integrity.

The annual award celebrates individuals who embody these values while contributing to a sustainable, efficient, and technologically advanced future.

Dr Róisín Buckley was named the overall 2024 winner. Darragh’s recognition as a finalist highlights the exceptional talent emerging from Longford.

His achievements serve as an inspiration to the local community, showcasing the vital role of engineering in shaping Ireland’s future.
