The centre has been deemed compliant and substantially compliant
A Longford designated centre for people with disabilities has received a very positive review in a new report from health watchdog chiefs.
Highfield House, which provides care for five male and female adult service users at Knockloughlin, on the outskirts of Longford town, was found to be either compliant or substantially compliant in all 14 areas of inspection.
The centre was found to be compliant in 12 areas, which included staffing, welfare and development, health care and fire precautions.

Meanwhile, the report ruled it was substantially compliant in two areas 'Fire precautions' and 'Governance and Management.
As part of the review the HIQA inspectors spoke with residents and the people who visit them, they spoke with staff and management to find out how they plan, deliver and monitor the care and observe practice and daily life.
Inspectors also review documents to see if appropriate records are kept and ensure that they reflect practice and what they are being told.
Highfield House was described as being a large two-storey dwelling that caters for people with disabilities and other healthcare related needs.
The inspection and review found the service was 'Clean, homely and inviting' and residents indicated they were happy and content with their care and surroundings.

The report stated prior to this inspection, the property had undergone significant renovations, but the majority of the renovation work had been completed.
However, there were some remaining minor issues highlighted in the external part of the property and, the internal flooring also required attention.
"One resident shook the inspectors hand and smiled. They appeared in good form and were preparing to go to their day service," the inspector report outlined. "This resident appeared very settled in their home and comfortable in the company and presence of staff."

All residents had their own bedrooms (with two being ensuite), which were decorated to their individual preference and had personal items such as family photographs on display.
The inspector observed another resident making their own breakfast and they also appeared to be in good form.
The inspector reviewed the files of two residents and "observed they were being supported to participate in recreational, social and learning activities of their preference and, try out new activities" such as a glamping holiday.

Written feedback from one family on the quality of service and the care provided by staff was also positive.
The centre had a clearly defined management structure in place which was led by an experienced person in charge who was supported in their role by a team leader and regional manager.
A review of a sample rosters indicated that there were sufficient staff on duty to care for residents and staff.
The residents were supported with their healthcare-related needs to live their lives based on their individual preferences and systems were in place to safeguard them.
Fire-fighting systems were in place to include a fire alarm system, fire doors, fire extinguishers and emergency lighting/signage. Equipment was being serviced as required by the regulations.
However, the report stated some issues were found in the fire safety arrangements and premises such as a fire door that did not fully close on the day of the inspection when the fire alarm panel was activated.
