A dark cloud of grief and loss settled over the community of Granard and beyond, when the sad news was heard that John Joe Pettit, Main Street, Granard had gone to his just reward on Saturday, December 14 last. Rest in Peace John Joe.

John Joe's great generosity, kindness and helpfulness have been rewarded in his Book of Life. He died peacefully at the Regional Hospital Mullingar with his family by his side under the excellent care of Professor Clare Fallon and the staff in medical 2.

Predeceased by his father Joe, mother Monica and brother-in-law Eddie, the late John Joe will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his sister Anne, brother Thomas, sister-in-law Maria, niece Rachel, nephews David, Joseph, John and Ed, grandnephews, grandnieces, relatives, many great friends and loyal customers.

John Joe was well known in Granard and further field and his shop on the Main Street, Granard was frequented by many. A gentleman is how John Joe would be described by anyone who crossed paths with him.

He had a welcome and a greeting for one and all on entering the shop, all age groups, young and old were treated with great courtesy and respect whether they were buying 'coloured sweet balls' or 'doing the weekly shop'.

He insisted on carrying out the shopping bags, to the bicycle carrier or the boot of the car where John Joe gave the impression that he had all the time in the world for his customers.

He always made sure to enquire about anyone's family or friend who might have been unwell at the time, how the farm was progressing or if they had any luck at the dogs and many more conversations were held.

John Joe loved to recall such details as the call of the cuckoo being heard in the bog, the arrival of the swallow and the fact that he took out the boat on the lake the previous Sunday, (not mentioning that the fish didn't bite that day).

His stock included food for families, and other delights for those longing for a cigarette or liquid boost. The ham that was stocked at Christmas on the bone was so delicious.

There were other delights such as a variety of real cheese and patè, I also remember when a Christmas Box would find its way into the shopping bag. He had an aviary with numerous birds who John cared for so well, and their appreciation of happy chirping (songs) rang through the shop for all customers to enjoy.

Gardening was another of his keen interests, from which the parish churches benefited from his colourful selection of flowers, especially at Easter time. His staff were always so helpful, which reflected the ethos of the owner, Mr John Joe Pettit.  Go raibh maith agat, agus leaba ì measc na naomh.

John Joe reposed in Smith's Funeral Home, Barrack Street, Granard (N39AX97), on Monday, December 16, with removal taking place on Tuesday morning, December 17 to St. Mary’s Church Granard for Funeral Mass followed by Christian burial in Granardkill cemetery.
